If you are not familiar with the bold adventurer Bear Grylls, then you have missed more than his entertaining death-defying adventures, courageous acts of faith, and stomach-churning survival techniques (that you pray you will never need to use). Behind the rugged face that we have all grown to love is a husband, a father, and an outspoken Christian who relies on his faith to carry him through tough times.
From risk to risk
Grylls is known for his determination and passion to seek out the riskiest and most daring adventures. He has climbed Mount Everest, crossed the Atlantic unassisted in an inflatable boat, slept inside the carcass of a dead camel in the Sahara desert, circumnavigated the British Isles on a jet ski, and more recently switched to survival and endurance TV shows such as Born Survivor, Man VS Wild, The Island, and more.
Shifting focus
And now, Bear has just released what he has called his “riskiest journey yet”, a daily devotional book for Christians. Although unconventional and seemingly out of the norm, he insists that this venture is part of the same pattern of pushing himself to the limits. According to Christian publishers Zondervan, Bear’s ‘Soul Fuel’ will “share some of his most exciting exploits and the spiritual insights he gained along the way in his first faith-focused book. Each section explores a theme Bear has lived, including purpose, courage, freedom, and risk.”

Bear’s devotional book is available in South Africa (we have found copies at Makro and online at Loot)! In this daily devotional, he shares about the faith that has held him and his family together. In an interview with the Telegraph, Grylls shares his inspiration for the book:
“I could have not done a book on faith,” he muses, “and it would be a lot safer.”
“In the words of CS Lewis, when the children in Narnia ask if Aslan [the Christ-like figure] is safe, the reply comes: ‘safe, no way, but he’s good’. I’m not sure if I have the exact words, but for me it sums up the journey of faith.”
The book began as something he had written for his family. “I have three boys,” he says.
“Faith has been a quiet but powerful part of our family and their lives growing up. And if I were ever not around, which will happen one day, here [in the book] are my thoughts.”
