One of the chapters in my still to be published book, Portrait of a Kingdom Builder: Lessons learnt from Nehemiah, addresses the aspect of building teams. It discusses the criteria for selecting a team, as articulated by Jethro when he was advising his son-in-law Moses in Exodus 18:17-20 and giving him counsel. He set out the criteria for selecting a solid and sound team:
1. Choose able men and women
These are men and women who have the skill, capacity, and ability to build a nation. They are people with a diverse set of skills that will help to build the Kingdom assignments, including nations. They have practical skills and valuable experience and expertise.
2. Choose God-fearing men and women
These are men and women who love God passionately and have God as their first priority. “To ‘fear God’ does not mean to be frightened of Him, but it means to have a deep reverence for Him. The Hebrew word yare means to ‘fear, to respect, or to revere’. The Greek word phobos means ‘reverential fear’ of God, not necessarily a fear of retribution, but an acknowledgement of His power and righteous retribution, and a wholesome dread of displeasing Him” (Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words). People who have the fear of God are those who adore God and have dedicated their lives to serving and honouring Him. Such men and women will understand that their service is unto the Lord. They will not leave the assignment half-finished because they have the “fear of God” in them and their service is unto the Lord. They also will not attempt to pervert, defile, or sabotage the assignment in any way because of the “fear of God” in them.
3. Choose men and women of truth
These are men and women of good character and integrity. The Bible says that a good name is better than gold. The level of truth in a person speaks directly to their character. Truth, honesty, and integrity go hand in hand. These people will not say one thing and do another. They “talk the talk”, but also “walk the walk”. They will not just talk about “moral regeneration”, but will demonstrate moral regeneration and what it means to live a moral life. The mandate to build a nation can only be entrusted to men and women of truth, integrity, and honesty.
4. Choose men and women who hate covetousness
Covetousness has to do with greed and desiring something that belongs to another person. Men and women who “covet” always want what belongs to others. Many people who assume positions of leadership change from being humble servants to becoming those who covet and desire after the very things that they are supposed to be giving to the nation. They no longer focus on building the nation, but are now fully involved in building their own empires and fiefdoms. In their pursuit of their personal agenda, many start looting the government coffers. Covetousness is associated with the love of money, material possessions, and impurity and immorality. People who are prone to being covetous are people who are also prone to lying and stealing to get what they want. People who covet are those who will be in the forefront of corruption.
