FEBA Sudan is officially on air. Living Hope Radio 105MHZ is not only the first FEBA station but also the first evangelical radio station in Sudan, where more than 90% of the population is Muslim.

Sudan has been plagued by violent conflict for decades. Three civil wars and the genocide in Darfur have left the country in a state of instability and abject poverty. The most recent civil war broke out in 2023 between Sudanese armed forces and a militia group known as the RSF (Rapid Support Forces). This war has led to what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with approximately 14 million people displaced.

It has also created a potential audience of nearly 4 million people for FEBA Sudan.

Construction on the radio station, staff accommodation, and a 90-metre tower began in March and was completed in three months. The region has little infrastructure – roads are little more than tracks, there is no electricity or running water, and no cell reception. FEBA installed a solar power system to ensure a steady power supply so that broadcasts can continue uninterrupted.

Sudan trip – FEBA directors

At the end of June, FEBA Radio South Africa’s national director, Dr Jurie Vermeulen, undertook a mammoth four-day journey by plane and car to Sudan and back with two other directors – Bright Sonjera from Mozambique and Pastor Amos Phiri from Malawi. They tested the equipment, recruited and trained staff in the principles of broadcasting, and facilitated the festive inauguration ceremony on 2 July.

Despite opposition to Christianity in the greater part of Sudan, those who live within FEBA Sudan’s reach appear to be more tolerant towards the new station. The words of 1 Peter 1:3, from which Living Hope Radio derives its name, offer a suitable response to God’s work through FEBA and a summary of the message they are now proclaiming across the region: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead…”
