I was driving around town the other day, stuck behind a bakkie that was plastered full of bumper stickers. I would assume that the gentleman was a Christian, as he had multiple stickers saying as much. I noticed, however, that the majority of the stickers on his car said “STOP” on them – Stop farm murders, stop abortion, stop the ANC, stop human trafficking, and so forth. I was encouraged by these noble causes, but a lingering thought stirred within me…
Standing up for what is noble
I couldn’t help but reflect on the tendency among Christians to swiftly identify and denounce wrongdoing, to call out sin, and to stand against the forces of darkness. While this is exactly what we have been called to do – to be salt and light on this earth – I felt disheartened by the observation that we often seem more inclined to decry what is wrong rather than to champion what is right. In the broader world, Christians are often marked by negativity, anger, frustration, judgmentalism, and a proclivity for complaints. It is ironic that we, who bear the greatest message of hope, are frequently perceived in such a manner. We find ourselves swift to boycott that which does not align with our values, yet how often do we actively stand up and support the causes and initiatives that do?
A new narrative
I want to propose a paradigm shift – a change from telling people what not to do, to actively promoting and encouraging the positive actions they should take. As Christians, it is our time to unite and fervently support one another and the body of Christ.
Embrace the role of solutions providers
The first step in this transformation is for us to see ourselves as providers of solutions rather than mere critics. It is easy to point out the problems in society, but it takes a different level of commitment and faith to actively engage in solving those problems. One way to achieve this is by seeking out opportunities to actively participate in initiatives and organisations that align with our values. By volunteering, donating, or lending our time and skills to these causes, we can be part of the solution rather than merely condemning the issues.
Shift your perspective
It’s crucial to remember that we possess the greatest message of hope in the world, the message of God’s love and salvation. Instead of focusing on what we oppose, let us shine a spotlight on what we believe in. For example, instead of simply protesting against abortion, promote the value of life and offer support and prayer to expectant mothers in need. Instead of criticising government policies or political parties, let us actively engage in the political process to bring about positive change.
Support the body of Christ
As Christians, our strength lies in our unity. In a world filled with noise and division, let’s be the voices of compassion, hope, and action. It’s time to shift our focus from merely saying “stop” to actively encouraging people to “start”. As Christians, let us be known not only for what we stand against but also for what we stand for. Our faith is a beacon of hope, and it’s time to let that light shine brilliantly, leading the way toward a better, more loving, and more harmonious world. So, the next time we find ourselves behind a “STOP” bumper sticker, let’s also envision the “START” that follows. The time for change is now, and it begins with us.
