The Mayor of the City of Cape Town along with his Mayoral Committee yesterday morning signed a pledge with Unashamedly Ethical, taking a strong and definitive stand against corruption. The pledge states as a government or political organisation they are committed to being UNASHAMEDLY ETHICAL with a list of various commitments and an agreement to being held accountable to such. The City of Cape Town has taken the lead as the first city in South Africa to make such a commitment, Unashamedly Ethical hopes that their pledge sets an example and helps pave the way for other Cities in the nation to follow. “We commend the City of Cape Town, and in particular, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews, along with their MAYCO team, for their courageous and principled commitment to becoming Unashamedly Ethical. In a time when the fight against corruption is more critical than ever this decision sends a powerful message to our nation that ethical leadership is not only desirable but attainable” says Gary Power, Managing Director of Unashamedly Ethical.

The pledge signed by the Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and his Committee including Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews committed the City of Cape Town to the following:
- To be honest and ethical in all dealings.
- To provide efficient, economic and effective public service delivery in an impartial and fair manner.
- To refuse to elicit, accept or pay any bribes, and to report those who do.
- To expect our members to disclose all personal or family financial interest which may affect their decision making.
- To negotiate all government contracts with the utmost integrity.
- To report fraud, corruption, nepotism, maladministration and other offenses.
- To ensure transparency, accountability, and fair administrative action by providing the public with timely, accessible and accurate information.
- To invest in the betterment of our employees and elected officials by good human resource management.
- To pursue the transformation of our sphere of influence and expertise in the public service
- To collaborate with our peers to impact the world positively.

Furthermore to the signing of the pledge the Mayor agreed to be held accountable to such through an Ethics Ombudsman. This makes the Unashamedly Ethical pledge more than just a promise but an act of accountability to which it commits. “The importance of the ombudsman is to
show that this is not an empty signing, but a willingness by the city to be accountable to a competent and independent ombudsman” said Keith Matthee, independent Ombudsman. Reflecting on the significance of this morning’s signing, Geordin Hill Lewis, Mayor of the City of Cape Town remarked “Corruption has eaten a hole in South Africa’s heart. We have to all act firmly to build the integrity of the state. In Cape Town we want every resident to feel confident that their public money is being spent wisely and honestly. That’s why we are happy to sign the pledge.”
