WHAT IS HAPPENING?
On Sunday, 16 September, the death toll in Derna, Libya, rose to about 11,300 after devastating floods caused by Storm Daniel and the failure of two dams. Thousands are still missing as rescue workers search for bodies, and hundreds are displaced after neighbourhoods were swept away.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
After the fall of long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya became a land divided by civil war and controlled by two governments. Since 2014, the ongoing conflict has pitted cities against each other and divided the entire country between rival governments in the east and west. Despite this, Libyans have driven through old front lines to deliver aid to flood-stricken areas – setting aside years of conflict between the opposing sides.
PRAY:
- That God would strengthen and protect rescue workers and survivors as they try to find the missing and rebuild their city.
- That this catastrophe would orchestrate a breakthrough in negotiations between the two opposing governments.
- That Libyan Christians, who face tremendous persecution, would display the hope they have in Christ amid this disaster.
