A boat-shaped formation in the mountains of eastern Turkey has Christians talking. Again. Perhaps you have seen the videos, the aerial photographs, or the underground scans that appear to show rooms and corridors. Some posts go further, declaring that Noah’s Ark has now been “100% confirmed”. Imagine that for a moment: the vessel we have read about since Sunday school, finally identified after thousands of years. Of course we would want to know more.

A boat in the mountains?
The site behind the excitement is the Durupınar formation, near Doğubayazıt in eastern Turkey. Identified in aerial photographs in 1959, its striking outline has fascinated researchers for decades. Ron Wyatt helped bring it to worldwide attention through his investigations. Measuring approximately 157 metres long, the formation corresponds closely to the Ark’s Biblical length of 300 cubits using a proposed ancient cubit measurement. You can understand why people keep returning to it.

What Genesis actually says
There is another detail that makes the location intriguing. Genesis 8:4 says the Ark rested on the “mountains of Ararat”. This could refer to the broader mountainous region, while still including the specific peak known as Mount Ararat. For those investigating Durupınar, the setting, shape, and measurements together offer a compelling reason to keep searching. Could this be where that extraordinary journey ended?

Permission to go further
After decades of investigations and efforts to secure permission for further work, researchers have something new to celebrate. Turkish authorities finally authorised a university-led research programme in 2026, opening the way for mapping, underground surveys, and core sampling. Led by Professor Cenker Atila of Sivas Cumhuriyet University, with support from Noah’s Ark Scans, the project brought together approximately 20 scientists and students from five countries. The search has entered a fresh chapter.

Clues beneath the surface
Researchers have been examining underground patterns interpreted as possible corridors, room-like spaces, and structural features. Earlier soil testing also reported higher organic matter inside the formation than outside, which supporters believe could reflect decayed timber. Taken together, the findings are strengthening the team’s conviction that something remarkable may lie beneath the surface. Now, samples collected during the latest fieldwork give laboratories the opportunity to investigate what those intriguing patterns actually represent.

Could the samples be wood?
Possible petrified wood has attracted particular attention, alongside a hard layer encountered during drilling. For now, the material’s identity and connection to any buried structure remain unconfirmed. Testing needs to establish what the samples contain, how old they are, and whether they show evidence of human construction. It is an exciting possibility to follow, especially as the work moves from interpreting underground images to examining material recovered from the site.

Excited, but not getting carried away
That is where the “100% confirmed” headlines get ahead of the investigation. Andrew Jones, a leading researcher with Noah’s Ark Scans, has cautioned that laboratory work and final reports are still outstanding. The Ark has not been conclusively identified. The university expects its wider evaluation and reporting to continue into 2027. We have encouraging developments to discuss, but the researchers still have work to do.

A troubling development
Away from the site, the team has reported a troubling incident. Jones’ apartment in Turkey was recently burglarised, with computers and storage devices stolen. Thankfully, the team says the research had been backed up and remained safe.

A reminder from Ken Ham
Ken Ham, whose ministry operates the Ark Encounter in Kentucky, has expressed caution. Responding to earlier Durupınar claims, he wrote: “We don’t want to inadvertently use a bad argument for the truth of God’s Word.” Ham remains sceptical of this site because he is concerned that the evidence may not be conclusive and that promoting an unverified claim could ultimately weaken rather than support confidence in the Biblical account. Christians can share a belief in the Biblical account while reaching different conclusions about a proposed discovery. Enthusiasm and discernment belong together as we examine what emerges.

Our faith remains secure
Could this be Noah’s Ark? That possibility is what makes the investigation so fascinating. We can hope, follow the research, and test the claims before passing them on. If convincing evidence emerges, what an extraordinary discovery it would be. If Durupınar turns out to have a natural explanation, our faith remains secure. God’s faithfulness has never depended on one hillside or one laboratory result. We can watch with anticipation and tell the truth while we wait. Over the next few weeks and months, many updates and findings from this site will be released. We recommend that readers follow the Noah’s Ark Scans’ team on social media for updates.
