The Far East Broadcasting Association is opening a station in Sudan.

In the first millennium, Sudan was predominantly Christian, but that changed with the arrival of Islam between 600 and 700 CE. Today, this country of approximately 46 million people is 90% Muslim and sits tenth on Open Doors’ World Watch List of countries where Christians are the most persecuted.

The local government has granted FEBA a license to open a radio station at in the Nuba Mountains, which form the geographical centre of Sudan. They sit on the border between Sudan and South Sudan, and served as an important battleground during the civil war that raged from 1983 to 2005 and claimed up to two million lives. Today, it still has a significant military presence and a large number of refugees.

There are between 90 and 100 mountains in the region, each inhabited by a different, autonomous tribe with its own leader, as well as its own language or dialect. FEBA is currently in the process of arranging the rigging of a tower – which will allow the station to broadcast within a 250 to 300 km radius – and the recruitment of station staff.

In keeping with FEBA’s policy of “national to national”, FEBA Sudan will make use of local presenters and producers for its programs. The approximately 2 million people of the Nuba Mountains will be FEBA’s immediate audience, but with a reach that includes the northern part of South Sudan as well, the potential audience is three times that.
