FEBA Thailand’s new program, KooChrist, is on a mission to save marriages through the gospel.
Like most countries, Thailand is facing a rising divorce rate. At least one out of every three marriages breaks up, leaving more than 147 000 fractured every year. Abuse in the home is unfortunately also a common problem. This lays the foundation for a broken future: without examples of strong relationships, children are more likely to repeat their parents’ mistakes.
KooChrist is FEBA Thailand’s response to this crisis. This Christian media program for couples features Christian spouses who share their personal stories of past struggles, while showing what it looks like to keep God at the centre of a marriage. The program is the first of its kind to be produced in Thailand. Within its first 60 days, KooChrist received nearly 3 million views and 390 000 likes. What is more, viewers started responding – sharing their own pain, expressing interest in Christian beliefs, and sharing encouragement.
The success, however, comes with significant challenges. Thailand is 93.2% Buddhist and less than 1% Christian. Thai culture is rooted in the Buddhist worldview. Other religions are generally tolerated as systems that help people to improve as human beings, but none of them is regarded as true. It is therefore unsurprising that some KooChrist viewers insist that Christianity is merely one of many paths to salvation and reject the notion of a Bible-based marriage. A FEBA Thailand staff member writes, “Seeing so many viewers watch our content while also pushing back represents how difficult it is to share the gospel in a place where people believe all paths are equal.”
Nevertheless, FEBA Thailand is undeterred. “We strive to create content that transcends traditional boundaries, serving as a powerful river that flows into every heart, allowing every individual to truly and personally know God.” For more information about FEBA and its work, please visit www.febaradio.co.za
