After years of work, the Far East Broadcasting Association (FEBA) has finally commenced with broadcasts in Niger.
FEBA is partnering with the only purely Christian radio station, Radio Lumière – lumière is French for “light” – in Niger’s capital, Niamey. Thanks to FEBA’s input, the station can appoint and train more staff members. FEBA Niger’s director, Mr Godi Rabo, has overseen the appointment of two new broadcasters and ensured that they received basic training in program production and broadcasting.

Niger is a challenging country for evangelists. It sits at number 27 on the 2024 Open Doors World Watch List of countries where Christians experience the worst persecution. In addition to political instability, which led to a coup in 2023, jihadists have posed a continual threat since 2015. Nearly half of the population live in extreme poverty due to extensive drought and a lack of arable land, and after about 125 years of Christian evangelisation, 99% of the country still adhere to Islam.
“The church is very small and divided,” says Dr Jurie Vermeulen, national director of FEBA Radio SA, which oversees the establishment of new stations in Africa and provides them with ongoing support. “The big challenge lies in finding an effective method to reach people.”
Despite the various difficulties that face the FEBA Niger team, there is also a great opportunity. Niamey’s population is approximately 1.5 million, while the radio station has a potential audience of 4 million people. That’s roughly one fifth of Niger’s population, who will now have access to the Good News.
