My journey is one of hope, purpose, and the belief that every person has a unique role to play in this world, no matter how big or small. I was featured on the front page of Beeld newspaper when I was just a few days old. My mom, who was a regular reader of the newspaper, saw my photo and immediately knew that she wanted to adopt me. At the time, South Africa was still under apartheid, and many others also wanted to adopt me. However, it was with the help of social worker Tessa van Wyk that my adoption became possible.
Discovery through loss
The full story of my adoption wasn’t revealed to me until much later in life. When I was about 23, just hours after my mom passed away, I felt an urge to go through her Bible. There, I found an envelope with my name on it, and inside, I discovered the Beeld article from when I was a baby. My mom had always told me she prayed to find me, but I had thought she had simply gone to an orphanage. Finding the article gave me a deeper understanding of how the Lord guided her to me.
A legacy of love
Not only did my mom raise me, but she also raised 27 other children, offering them love and the chance at a better life. Her kindness and dedication inspired me to make a difference in the world as well. In 2016, I founded a women’s foundation that provides care packages to government hospitals because I believe that even the smallest act of kindness can have a profound impact. I understand how overwhelming life can feel, especially for women facing difficult decisions, much like my biological mother may have.
Empowering women
In 2018, I started a female empowerment network, along with an online magazine that amplifies the voices of inspiring women. In 2021, I launched my personal brand, which is focused on sharing others’ inspiring stories, as I believe in the power of writing to heal and empower. I have been featured in several local magazines and had the honour of being on the cover of Huisgenoot in 2021. Additionally, I am a radio presenter, pageant judge, and entrepreneur. I host pageants, run my own clothing line, and continue to empower others through my work.
The power of destiny
The message I wish to share is simple: we all have a purpose. If the person hadn’t found me at the train station, if Beeld hadn’t published my photo, if my mom hadn’t adopted me, or if the social worker hadn’t stepped in, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to help so many others along the way. Our actions have the power to change lives. Thank you, Jesus!
