Vuyani Ndumela never imagined that his life would take such a turn. Raised in the townships of Cape Town, he found himself incarcerated at Drakenstein Correctional Centre as a young man. But it was there, in the midst of confinement, that he encountered the transformative power of the Gospel. Through a discipleship programme, he came to faith in Christ, a turning point that reshaped his entire future.
Upon his release in 2023, Vuyani stepped into an unfamiliar world, one where opportunities were scarce, but his resolve was strong. He moved in with his father and sister in Khayelitsha, determined not to return to his old ways. Instead, he sought out skills training and began working as a carpenter, crafting cupboards to provide for himself and his family. He was not just trying to survive, he was rebuilding his life with purpose.
His hunger for the Word of God led him to Mukhanyo Theological College, where he enrolled in the Higher Certificate in Bible Training (HCBT) at the Montrose Park site in 2024. But pursuing his studies came with real challenges. Transport costs were high, and getting to class on time often felt impossible. He pressed on, refusing to let hardship stand in the way of his calling.
Then, something unexpected happened. A donor, hearing about Vuyani’s dedication, gave him a simple yet life-changing gift; a bicycle. For many, it’s an everyday item, but for him, it meant everything.
“I have never received a gift like this! I am so grateful to finally receive this bicycle because it has been challenging getting to school on time, and especially not having money to attend. This will even help me in my work as a carpenter to get to my customers. Since I have been walking with Christ, I know how important it is that I attend church services and mid-week services regularly! I still have many challenges, but the Lord Jesus Christ is helping me, as I put my trust in Him.”
Rev Neil Henry, Regional Coordinator for Mukhanyo’s Western Cape site, sees Vuyani’s journey as an encouragement to many. “Vuyani is an example of what it means to be transformed by the Gospel. This is why we do what we do at Mukhanyo.”
