I was recently invited to attend a seminar at the House of Louis Business Academy. The Academy is a prestigious business school with a strong Christian ethos. It has been running since 2003 and has 17 years of experience through equipping and nurturing the entrepreneurial spirit of attending students. Not knowing what to expect, I eagerly showed up to the Devon Valley Hotel in Stellenbosch, which is where the Academy takes place. Never in my wildest dreams have I experienced a business venue as beautiful – with striking pink mountains as the backdrop, lush vineyards on the farm, and a breath-taking hotel. All of this painted the setting for a morning of insight and wisdom. I did not expect to be so intellectually stimulated and mentally captivated, all while sitting in such a beautiful and serene setting.

Value in people
As I arrived I was welcomed by friendly staff. I took my seat in the auditorium and watched as students started walking in. Expecting a room full of younger attendees, I was surprised to see a wide range of people across all journeys of life. There were many younger students in the room, yet there were just as many acclaimed and experienced business men and women. Everyone came in with a smile and an expectant attitude. It was evident to me from the get go that the attendees were excited to come back to another seminar, which takes place every Saturday morning and runs over 12 weeks. I took the opportunity to meet some of the students and asked them about their experiences from the course. I was blown away by the responses, with each and every person telling me that this course had changed or was changing their business life.
Christianity is central
As everyone took their seats, we were welcomed by Alan Louis himself, the visionary behind the Academy. He talks about his calling from God, which is to encourage and equip others to enter the marketplace with enthusiasm, following Biblical marketplace principles. Alan is a highly successful business man and imparts this knowledge onto each student. He leads the seminar through his own experiences. He opened the morning in prayer, reading Scripture and dedicating the class to Christ. This course far exceeded all of my expectations. To say that it is world class would be an under exaggeration. All the principles taught, lessons expressed, and examples given come from a Christian worldview, based on 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
Giving you an edge
The specific seminar that I attended was focused on utilising the right hemisphere of your brain in business, as opposed to only operating with the left hemisphere, which is the norm in the business world. I was intrigued by the content, and had never heard of this principle in a business setting. Guest lecturers and renowned artists Peter and René Snyman led the class, which was interactive and entertaining. The students were thoroughly enjoying the content and exercises that were presented. The class focused on drawing your own business plan, investing in yourself, as well as an interesting twist that business is not all logic, it is your creativity that gives you the edge that makes you stand out in the marketplace. The course focuses on equipping you with an edge and then nurturing that edge – practical tools to help you in your career.

The seminar that I attended was riveting. The course clearly instils passion and builds confidence. It unleashes your potential and equips you to chase your dreams. Where universities teach academic theory, this Academy focuses on real life issues and practicalities. It is guided by and framed within the Christian Biblical view of the marketplace.
