15,000 military personnel from the People’s Liberation Army marched in front of Tiananmen Square, as more than 100,000 civilians cheered and watched their government showcased its military might, on the 70th birthday of the People’s Republic of China.

If this mass is viewed as impressive, it gives you chill that more than ten times of these crowds combined, between one to two millions of Uighurs are currently suffering in the so-called “re-education camps” in Xinjiang, facing torture, forced labor, and inhumane treatment as communist China flexes its muscle to the world.

Thousands of human rights activists, lawyers, and petitioners continue to stay behind bars for “endangering state security.” Many have not been heard from for years since their arrest. Open trials have been missing for these individuals, and many are denied access of their lawyers and family members.

Crackdown against the Church in China also sent thousands of Christians to prisons; tore down crosses, shrines and churches; confiscated Bibles and church properties, and foisted President Xi Jinping’s thoughts and party ideology on state-sanctioned churches across the country.

DNA sampling, high density of surveillance cameras, and certain cell phone Apps are tools used by Beijing to monitor Chinese citizens’ movement and bio-data. Everybody is being watched at all time in this authoritarian state.

Yes, indeed China has grown to be a global power that has advanced economically and militarily. Its influence also reaches beyond its borders and can no longer be ignored. Yet, just as U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last month, China is the perpetrator of “the worst human rights crises of our time.” What is there to celebrate when its people do not get to enjoy freedom of speech, religious liberty, and freedom of assembly?
