The famed Israeli intelligence agency, the Mossad, managed to thwart a series of Iranian terror attacks aimed at Israelis visiting at least three African countries, Israel’s Channel 12 reported.
Local intelligence in Ghana, Senegal and Tanzania has reportedly arrested five terrorists, acting on information received from “Western” sources, Channel 12 said.
The terrorists—African nationals recruited by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ powerful Quds Force, trained in Lebanon and then sent back on a mission to seek out and slay Israeli and Jewish targets—have for months been trying to strike Israeli businesspeople in Ghana and Senegal, and tourists in Tanzania, a popular safari spot for Israelis.
Iran’s objective behind the series of foiled terror attacks goes beyond merely murdering and maiming Israelis. The mullahs in Tehran are still seething over the November 2020 assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the mastermind behind Iran’s nuclear ambitions, for which it blames Israel and seeks to get even.
This appears to be the latest scuffle in the shadow war waged covertly between the Jewish state and the Islamic Republic over the past decades. However, following Fakhrizadeh’s assassination last year, Iran has sought to turn up the heat with a number of attempted terror attacks on Israeli targets, including in India and Cyprus.
The fact that none of Iran’s terror attempts have borne any bloody fruit does not mean Israelis abroad are safe. In fact, intelligence officials in Jerusalem have warned that Tehran may well continue to target Israelis in countries where they believe security to be weaker until they feel that they have saved face and gained at least a measure of revenge for Fakhrizadeh’s death.
