The previous ANC majority government’s quest to ram the “Sexual Offenses Amendment Bill” through Parliament – seeking to decriminalize the entire sex-industry in SA is being exposed for what it really is – surrender to foreign influence and not the will of citizens.

The Bill stalled in Parliament last year when state law advisors warned it may be unconstitutional. As a result of the failed agenda to impose legalized prostitution on the SA public, the foreign-funded “Sex Workers Education & Advocacy Taskforce” (SWEAT) filed a High Court application to repeal the laws that criminalise prostitution – to justify its funding.

Global sexual rights radicals who influence ANC policy also fund certain NGO’s in South Africa to push its anti-family agenda. SWEAT’s High Court application is an attempt to by-pass the democratic legislative process to get prostitution legalized by judicial decree.

Family Policy Institute (FPI) joins with other pro-family groups to oppose SWEAT’s High Court application. Parliament in consultation with the SA public must formulate a workable policy solution that prosecutes sex-buyers and help vulnerable women exit the sex-trade.

On 3 Oct, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) debated a motion for a resolution on prostitution entitled “Protecting the human rights and improving the lives of sex workers and victims of sexual exploitation” Although the debate was hijacked in an attempt to normalise “sex work,” the report was sent back to the parliamentary commission on equality and non-discrimination because it could not get political agreement for a vote.

UN agencies like UNESCO and the WHO endorse and promote “sex work” as a human right although the overwhelming body of evidence indicate that prostitution is incompatible with human rights and dignity – because of its links to abuse, exploitation & sex-trafficking.

Significantly, however, It is expressly stated in the Preamble to the United Nations Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others (1949): “prostitution and the accompanying evil of the traffic in persons for the purpose of prostitution are incompatible with the dignity and worth of the human person and endanger the welfare of the individual, the family and the community.

Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women & Girls, called for pornography and prostitution to be abolished in her report entitled “Prostitution and violence against women and girls,” presented to the UN Human Rights Council on June 21, 2024. Thankfully, the tide appears to be turning against all forms of sexual exploitation.

The ANC’s minority in Parliament restrains it from ramming its sexual rights agenda through the National Legislature. This opens the door for a truly democratic process in which citizens can meaningfully contribute to a policy that significantly curtails the terrible exploitation inherent in prostitution and help women exit the sex slave market.

The South African government was forced to request an extension when it missed a deadline in its court battle over the National Health Insurance (NHI) Act. Trade union, Solidarity is challenging the constitutionality of certain clauses in the NHI scheme.

The unaffordable NHI was hurriedly signed into law by President Ramaphosa before the 2024 Elections – but not yet promulgated. Various medical associations and business groups in South Africa objected to government phasing out private medical aid providers.

The private sector appears to have little faith in the state’s ability to competently manage a national health scheme as complex as the NHI. The former ANC majority government ran every public enterprise into the ground as a result of corruption and gross incompetence.

Thankfully, however, the fact that Ramaphosa must now consult with his partners in the GNU – and not the ANC NEC exclusively – gives him room to consider a wider range of views. He appears to be working more closely with business leaders on key policy issues.

South Africa’s business leaders appear more optimistic about the country’s prospects for economic turnaround. It may be because they have a better sense of the government policies that inhibit economic growth and how business-friendly policies can drive growth.

As a result, the government-business partnership has already produced dividends. Where the ANC has control – the outcomes are usually disastrous. For example, although the GNU is improving national governance, ANC controlled municipalities lie in ruin causing untold hardship to millions. Incredibly, Ramaphosa appears incapable of fixing this mess.

In addition to multiple court challenges to the NHI Act, the “Basic Education Laws Amendment” (BELA) Bill is also facing significant resistance from a wide range of private sector groups as well as court action from within the GNU. This bodes well for democracy.

What this all means is that the ANC’s three-decade stranglehold on South Africa’s economic and social policies – that brought the country to the brink of collapse – has well and truly ended. It is now being reigned in on every front for the good of the entire country.

The next challenge is transforming SA’s municipalities. Most of which are in various states of collapse as a result of rampant corruption and staggering incompetence. The GNU must therefore be replicated in local government to improve governance closest to the people.
