Muna, a young lady in Nepal, had an eye condition that made it difficult to see in bright light. She was forced to stay indoors, in near darkness, and there the radio became her constant companion. While listening to a broadcast of Afno FM, FEBA’s partner in Nepal, Muna heard of a surgical procedure that could help with her condition.
Once she received the surgery at a nearby hospital, she not only regained her sight, but her life. She has now become a well-known poet in Nepal.
Open Doors has identified Nepal as having “one of the fastest-growing Christian populations in the world”, yet it can be difficult to live as a Christian there. While the constitution allows for freedom of religion, and Christians are free to gather in worship, there is a law that prohibits any “conversion activity”, i.e. any act that may cause another person to convert to a new religion. The vague wording of the law means that something like baptism, carrying a Bible, or even mentioning Jesus’ name in public can lead to punishment.
This is why FEBA’s partner takes care to convey the Good News in a roundabout way, infusing programs about health and education with Christian values. Its network also keeps expanding; in September 2024, it launched a new community radio station in an area with a potential audience of 370 000. In addition to health and education, listeners also learn about agriculture and enjoy entertainment programs.
She was so inspired by the messages of love and service she heard in Afno FM’s broadcasts, and witnessed in Christian hospitals affiliated with them, that she decided to follow Christ.
“I am inspired by Christians, their love, concern, service,” she says. “So now I live my new life in Jesus.”
