The world’s top golfer has emphasised that whether he wins or loses, his identity is ‘secure forever’ in Jesus.
Speaking at a press conference after winning his second Masters title, Scottie Scheffler said: “I have been given a gift of this talent”, adding, “I’ve been called to come out here, do my best, compete and glorify God”.
The 27-year-old attends Bible study with his caddie Ted Scott, and co-hosts an annual retreat with the College Golf Fellowship.
‘Special’
Scheffler explained that before he won: “I was sitting around with my buddies this morning. I was a bit overwhelmed because I told them I wish that I didn’t want to win as badly as I did. Or as badly as I do. I think it would make the mornings easier, but I love winning. I hate losing.”
“And my buddies told me this morning, you know, my victory was secure on the cross. And that’s a pretty special feeling.
“To know that I’m secure for forever and it doesn’t matter. You know whether or not I win this tournament or if I lose this tournament, you know, my identity is secure for forever.”
Prayer
When Scheffler won his first Masters in 2022, he revealed how his wife Meredith, also a Christian, supports him as he seeks to balance his desire to win with his faith in God.
He said: “Meredith told me this morning, she said: ‘If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by ten shots, if you never win another golf tournament again, I’m still going to love you, you’re still the same person, Jesus loves you, and nothing changes.’
“Every day when we go out there, Meredith always prays for peace, because that’s what I want to feel when I’m out there on the golf course. I want to feel peace and have fun and I want to feel his presence. That’s her prayer every day, and that’s my prayer, and I really felt that today.”
