Legendary multi-platinum Christian music artist Michael W. Smith stars in the movie ‘Beautifully Broken’. It is a faith based movie produced by ArtAffects, based on a true story. It tells the stories of a refugee’s escape, a prisoner’s promise and a daughter’s secret.
Smith told the Christian Post, “Everybody’s got stuff going on in their lives, every believer, every nonbeliever, I mean you just can’t avoid it. We live in a broken world and unfortunately that’s my problem with ‘faith-based films’ that seem to be nicely wrapped up in a bow. You don’t really get the raw things of what goes on in people’s lives and that’s what I love about this movie.”
The movie’s emotions are raw and real, but moviegoers will learn about forgiveness and reconciliation. Variety Film Review said, “Solidly crafted and intelligently inspiring, ‘Beautifully Broken’ skillfully entwines three narratives about faith, forgiveness, and fortuitous interconnections in a drama that likely will receive a warm reception from audiences with a taste for evangelical entertainment. Director Eric Welch and his co-writers attempt a tricky balancing act here, comparing and contrasting the struggles of two African families affected by the 1994 Rwandan Genocide with crises that disrupt a well-to-do white family in Nashville.”
Smith mentioned how the movie inspired him to be more transparent about his spiritual journey. He said, “I think of me almost dying. I was playing with fire in the late ’70s and I had a near-death experience and began to pray that God would rescue me because I knew I would die if something didn’t change.”
He then told about a nervous breakdown which led him to recommit his life to Jesus, “Then I had this nervous breakdown, beyond, honestly. It was just that God came and He laid down beside me on the floor in my kitchen as I wept and convulsed for three hours, from midnight to 3:00 in the morning. I haven’t been the same since I got up off the floor,” he testified. He shared that he had been abusing drugs and alcohol, but during his nervous breakdown his parents never judged him, but continued praying for him and showing him God’s love.
Smith continued saying that the approach his parents gave him is now how he is ministering to his daughter. He said, “We have a daughter who’s going through a really hard time; her husband left her. It’s awful…But watching faith rise up in her, watching faith rise up in the whole family, you just see the faithfulness of God in the midst of a very difficult situation. We have to lean on the only one that can comfort and fill the gap and make us whole and that’s what we do.”
Focus on the Family’s Plugged In movie review cautions bringing kids to the movie due to violence, but says, “Beautifully Broken offers an inspiring reminder that God cares deeply about families everywhere, and that He sometimes uses the most unlikely twists and turns of our lives and relationships to accomplish His good purposes.”
