Mmusi Maimane is the leader of the official opposition in South Africa, the Democratic Alliance (DA). Errol Naidoo, the Founder and CEO of Family Policy Institute, recently interviewed Maimane about the DA’s stance on Christian values. Although the DA does not classify itself as a Christian party, Maimane himself is an outspoken Christian with Pastoral training and a history in ministry.
Q: You’re a Christian Mmusi, what do you have to say to those who are questioning your faith?
“I am unashamedly a child of God. I gave my life to Jesus at a young age, and have continued to serve Him. I served in my local church, I have been in ministry. I feel that what I do now in our nation isn’t a function of serving a political agenda, it is about serving God – who has placed me in my position. In absolute humility I recognise that my faith, my constitution, is organised around service to Jesus. I am unashamed about this. I lead a nation where there are of course many different faiths and religions; and I know that this is where God called me. I serve in a political party that upholds the constitution, but gives me the right to express my Christian faith. . . God didn’t just come for Christians, He came for all.”
Q: Do you encourage the respect of our Almighty Father in Parliament and in everything that you do here in government?
“Absolutely! When you say, ‘Who am I accountable to’, first and foremost I am accountable to God. I pray, I have to seek out God’s wisdom in making tough decisions. And I give the license for anybody to be able to follow that. In Parliament especially, when the speaker opens she announces a time for silent prayer and meditation, I accept that in that room other people may do other things, but I will always reflect and say, ‘God we need your wisdom here in the decisions that we make.’ That is what organises my life and allows me as an individual to stand on Godly principles.”
