There is nothing you can do to stop lava. Once a volcano erupts and the fissures open, it’s nearly impossible to fight it. 

“The flows cannot be stopped, but people have tried in the past,” said Benjamin Andrews, director of the Global Volcanism Program at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

Kilauea, a volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island erupted causing lava to start pouring out over 104 acres of land.  

Officials in Hawaii are calling for residents to stay as far away from the lava as possible. Even mere exposure to the gas coming off of it can be life-threatening to humans. They have created perimeters around Hawaii’s Big Island in order to keep people away from the dangers of the eruption.

The following video shows a timelapse as lava pours onto the street and literally engulfs a Ford Mustang.

USGS Volcano, a site that delivers official volcano updates, reported on Twitter a video that was taken from the sky. They wrote “Helicopter view of fissure 12 in the forest south of Malama Street in the Leilani Estates Subdivision. Eruptions temps can be as high as 2,000 degrees F.”

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency posted a link on Facebook to the official “website to answer questions, volunteer, make donations, lost/found pets and links to other important resources/information.”
