Human trafficking remains a global crisis that demands strong international collaboration. Two organisations, Not I But We and global act with its social label KitePride are demonstrating how cross-continental partnerships can create lasting impact.
Over the past eight years, Tabea and Matthias Oppliger and their team have produced more than 70,000 bags made from recycled kites, providing safe and dignified employment to survivors of human trafficking and forced prostitution. Following the closure of their production facility in Tel Aviv due to the ongoing war, global act began establishing new production partnerships in three countries to continue its mission. About one and a half years later, this vision has taken root in South Africa through a new collaboration with Not I But We, based in Cape Town. The non-profit organisation creates safe and meaningful job opportunities for women survivors of human trafficking and gender-based violence.
The partnership has already resulted in an initial production of 100 upcycled drawstring bags, soon to be available through KitePride’s online store in Switzerland. For Not I But We, this collaboration enables the creation of additional employment opportunities — a critical step in breaking the cycle of re-exploitation of survivors. While upcycling was already central to Not I But We’s work, crafting bags from recycled
kites was a novelty. At the same time, KitePride remains true to its brand values and directly contributes to the economic reintegration of survivors. This partnership represents a meaningful win-win for all parties involved. And a message to all kite surfers out there in Cape Town: you can donate your old kites and contribute to lasting change in survivors’ lives.
