“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything, give thanks; for this is the will of God.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I have a little prayer book in which I have written down the names of my family, close friends, and all those I am led to or have been asked to pray for. In total, it’s about 25 people. It takes approximately an hour and a half to pray through the list, lifting each person up to the Lord and allowing the Spirit to guide my prayers for them. For some, I make specific requests as I am aware of their struggles. Many of the people on my list face real challenges – circumstances that, truthfully, only God can resolve.

When problems persist
What fascinates me, however, is that after a few months, I ask or observe whether their situation has changed. More often than not, they are still struggling with the same issues. I know that the Lord hears our prayers, and I know that He helps us continuously. Yet I have come to realise that some people hold onto their problems, and I wonder if their circumstances will ever change until they do. It is partly a matter of attitude, but I also believe that, for some, their identity becomes wrapped up in their struggles. If this is the case, they may never truly let go. So, should I continue praying for them? Scripture instructs us to pray without ceasing, and so I do.

The power of thanksgiving
Another important lesson the Lord has taught me is the need to give thanks in every circumstance – because gratitude brings about change. Sometimes our problems are not as overwhelming as they seem, but we must learn to confess gratitude first. This shifts our focus, helping us to cope and concentrate on what we do have rather than what we lack.

Speaking life in prayer
With this in mind, I decided to write a beautiful, positive description – filled with affirmations and adjectives – for each person, and I now pray these words over them. I always feel so encouraged after each prayer session and I am often led to share these encouraging words with the individuals I am praying for. The responses have been wonderful. I believe we should be doing this for ourselves, too.

Let gratitude lead
Pray the positives – the blessings – first. Let gratitude flow from our lips before making our requests known.
