WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The UN has reported that more than 114 million people are estimated to be displaced worldwide – the highest number since the UNHCR (UN refugee agency) began recording data in 1975. According to the UNHCR, the main causes of displacement in the first half of 2023 were conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, and the DRC; strife in Afghanistan; and natural disasters and instability in Somalia. In October 2023 alone, 1.4 million Palestinians have been reported displaced due to the current Israel-Gaza conflict.
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The Global Church should view this surge as an opportunity to practice love and hospitality towards those displaced, like Jesus encouraged us to do in Matthew 25:35. Jesus, as a baby, was received in Egypt along with his parents when they fled from King Herod (Matt 2:13). Believers, as foreigners in this world, can share their hope and refuge in Jesus with those seeking safety and refuge in other countries.
Pray:
- for the Lord’s divine intervention within countries that are facing conflict, instability and natural disasters
- for those who are displaced to seek and find the God of refuge
- for believers to display Christ as they feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, and invite the stranger in
