The Zimbabwean presidential and parliamentary election date has been announced for Wednesday 23 August 2023. Zimbabwe was previously known as Southern Rhodesia (at the behest of Cecil Rhodes’s British South Africa Company and named after former coloniser Cecil John Rhodes). Its current name, Zimbabwe, is derived from the Karanga dialect and means “house of stones”. Yeshua said in Matthew 16:18 that He will build His church upon a rock and the gates of hell will not prevail upon it. Let us pray as a global community that Zimbabwe will not just be a house of stones, but will become an ecclesiastical rock that Yeshua will build upon.
Former breadbasket of the SADC region
Zimbabwe was once a formidable nation, known as a breadbasket to the Southern African Development Community region and beyond with its supply of maize and other agricultural commodities. When Zimbabwe became independent on April 18 1980, I was still studying for my first degree in political science at Temple University in Philadelphia, USA. I distinctly recall that the Zimbabwean dollar was almost on par with the US dollar. In fact, in 1980, you needed $1,60 (US) at that time to purchase $1 Zimbabwean. Forty-three years later, Zimbabwe faces startling economic challenges, despite being one of the richest nations in Africa with its vast mineral reserves. Zimbabwe has the third highest platinum reserve, after South Africa and Russia.
A prophecy
Prophesies have been released to say that Zimbabwe will once again be that breadbasket. This prophetic word is one that has been released over Africa as a whole. We stand on that word and cover Zimbabwe in prayer during this critical time.
Prayers for the Zimbabwean elections
- Pray for the safety and protection of the Zimbabwean people (according to Psalm 91), especially for those who will be travelling from outside to vote.
- Pray that the elections are free of fraud, corruption, and intimidation. Pray for transparency and honesty in vote counting and for a truthful and righteous independent election agency, election monitoring system, and election observer teams.
- Pray for the body of Christ to wake up to its ecclesiastical mandate to facilitate legislative and cultural transformation in the nation (Matt 16:18).
- Pray for accurate and truthful reporting by the media and fair election coverage.
- Pray that voters will seek discernment to choose wisely between truth and false representation (according to Hosea 14:9 and Philippians 1:9-10).
- Pray for Zimbabwe to arise, shine, and align with her redemptive purpose for Africa and the nations at large.
- Pray for Zimbabwe to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matt 6:33), and for righteousness, justice, and God’s will to prevail.
Righteousness and justice
God’s justice does not come without righteousness. In the Kingdom of God, righteousness and justice go hand in hand, they are the foundation of God’s throne (Ps 97:2). The nations that will thrive in this season are those that will stand for righteousness. Proverbs 14:34 says that “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach”. Let us pray for the leaders of Zimbabwe to refuse to bow down to any work of unrighteousness in the form of corruption, criminality, or any form of immorality whatsoever.
Ke Nako Zimbabwe, we stand with you in prayer!
