Smart Choices: A Value-Based CSE-Alternative

In March 2020, a group of devoted educationalists met in Durban to initiate and develop a values-based sexuality education curriculum that adopts a sexual health, wellness, and character-building approach to sexuality education. The discussions were motivated by the nationwide controversy sparked by revelations of the harmful ideology entrenched in “Comprehensive Sexuality Education” (CSE). CSE is currently being imposed on South Africa’s public schooling system by the Department of Basic Education – despite overwhelming public opposition. CSE takes an ideological “sexual rights” approach to sexuality education – thereby driving a wedge between parents and their children.

A sinister Trojan Horse
Most parents and educators are deeply concerned by the age-inappropriate content and sexually explicit illustrations evident throughout the CSE programme. Sharon Slater, President of Family Watch International and the UN Family Rights Caucus conducted an in-depth study of the origins and objectives of CSE. She was deeply disturbed to discover the programme is a Trojan Horse for abortion and LGBTQI propaganda aimed at indoctrinating impressionable young children. Shocked by this discovery, Slater and her team were compelled to produce the groundbreaking documentary “The War On Children,” to expose the sinister social engineering goals devised by the global sexual rights radicals behind CSE.

Changing societal sexual norms
So, who are the groups behind CSE? First there is Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the US. This was established by Margaret Sanger, who believed that “abortions were a means to cull the racially inferior and mentally unfit from society.” Planned Parenthood states, “Using a gender transformative approach, CSE is a means to transform gender roles and advance equitable social systems.” Then there is the Sexuality Information Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), who’s primary objective is to use “sex-ed for social change.” SIECUS was started by Mary Calderone, a devotee of eugenist and serial paedophile, Alfred Kinsey. Many other sexual rights radicals are involved in the development of CSE. Their poisonous ideology is woven throughout the CSE programme with the stated objectives of transforming gender roles and changing the sexual norms of society.

The Department of Basic Education has consistently ignored and even rubbished the valid concerns of parents, educators, and religious leaders in South Africa.

A credible alternative
In contrast, “Smart Choices” – the new values-based sexuality education curriculum – provides a safe and credible alternative to the harmful ideology of CSE. Smart Choices is based on traditional and common-sense values that are shared by the majority of South African families. But why is an alternative to CSE necessary? The troubling answer is because the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has consistently ignored and even rubbished the valid concerns of parents, educators, and religious leaders in South Africa. The DBE is heavily influenced by the dangerous sexual rights ideology championed by UN agencies – not the values of its citizens. DBE Minister Angie Motshekga insists her department will push ahead with the implementation of CSE in public schools nationally, despite widespread public concern.

CSE is not compulsory
Motshekga did however confirm that CSE is not compulsory. In reply to an opposition party question in Parliament, Motshekga said, “Children are not compelled to participate in CSE lessons if parents are not happy with it. They can adopt alternative sexuality education programmes as long as its CAPS compliant.” That is why Smart Choices and its supplementary programmes were developed – to provide safe, credible, and agenda-free sexuality education alternatives for discerning parents and educators. To quote Buckminster Fuller, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing obsolete.” We believe the integrity of Smart Choices will make CSE obsolete.

Details about the Smart Choices curriculum
Significantly, Smart Choices achieves the mandatory minimum requirements set by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Life Skill and Life Orientation subjects. It is supplemented by excellent educational and training programmes for parents and educators called “No Apologies”, “Not Guilty” and “Tomorrow’s Leaders in Training” (TLT). These programmes offer critical guidelines for the training of children in various age groups. The Smart Choices curriculum was developed over several years by Dr Darleen Edwards-Meyer who holds a Diploma in Higher Primary Education, B.A (Cum Laude); B. Ed. (Psych) (Cum Laude); M.Ed. (Cum Laude) Ph.D. [Social Education-1994]. She specialises in the field of Relationships, Sexuality, HIV & AIDS, and Life Skills Education. Dr Edwards-Meyer has been actively involved in Education as a senior lecturer at three South African Universities for 13 years and as a service provider to the Department of Education for 11 years – as well as developing and implementing numerous official South African Education School programmes.

African solutions for African problems
More importantly, Smart Choices and the supplementary programmes are developed by South African educators who understand the unique challenges facing South African children. In contrast, CSE is developed by global sexual rights radicals and imposed on African nations by well-funded UN agencies. The South African government has repeatedly called for “African solutions for African problems.” However, in 2013 government signed onto CSE at a meeting with UN agencies without consulting parents or educators. CSE is a foreign imposition on South African public schools and therefore incapable of grasping the unique social challenges facing South African children. Significantly, however, Smart Choices was designed with the specific needs of South Africa’s children in mind. Dr Edwards-Meyer’s extensive experience in domestic education strategically positions her to design a programme that adequately equips vulnerable children with the tools they need to safely navigate the minefield of conflicting sexual misinformation that is so pervasive in contemporary society.

Smart Choices provides a safe and credible alternative to the harmful ideology of CSE.

Smart Life Programme
Smart Choices is part of Smart Life, a multi-level educational package for educators, parents, caregivers, teachers, counsellors, etc. It teaches children and young people of all ages to make Smart Choices for a Smart Life. The programme also provides instruction to protect against relationship and sexual abuse. Smart Life is an acronym for Sexuality Mentoring, AIDS, Relationship Training, Life skills & Family Education programmes. Considering the high rates of sexual exploitation and abuse of children in South Africa, the common sense values inherent in the Smart Choices curriculum and the supplementary training programmes are precisely the education that children need to navigate the highly sexualised culture they live in. No Apologies Programme
Developed by Focus on the Family Africa, “No Apologies” declares, “In a culture teeming with sexual images, inappropriate messages, and dangerous advice about sex – more than ever before – adolescents need help to steer through the sea of mixed messages that surrounds them.” The programme covers critical topics like “Character, consequences, dreams and goals, identity, self-worth, virtual world, pornography, risks, boundaries and choices, healthy relationships, abstinence, and commitment.” More information is available at safamilies.co.za

Not Guilty and Not Alone Programmes
The “Not Guilty” and “Not Alone” programmes are developed to inspire and equip primary caregivers and teachers to preserve the sexual health and innocence of children. Tomorrow’s Leaders In Training Programme
