Press statement by Bafana Modise; National spokesperson SAFI
South Africans stand in solidarity with the people of Iran as they mark what many describe as the end of 47 years of authoritarian rule.
“In 1994, the world celebrated alongside South Africa as we emerged from decades of institutionalized oppression and embraced freedom and democracy. Among those who observed and acknowledged that historic moment were people across the globe including the people of Iran. Today, we echo that same spirit of solidarity,” states Bafana Modise, Spokerson at SAFI.
As the Iranian regime collapses amid widespread unrest, we affirm our support for the freedom, dignity, and self-determination of the Persian people. A nation of over 90 million citizens deserves governance rooted in accountability, human rights, and opportunity, not fear and repression.
Modise added that: “As a country that has experienced the weight of injustice, South Africa understands that freedom is not merely political, it is moral. It is therefore our responsibility to stand with oppressed people everywhere, regardless of geography or political alignment.”
Reports and images of Iranians celebrating across major cities worldwide reflect a collective longing for renewal and hope. Their courage reminds the world that the desire for liberty cannot be extinguished.
We further acknowledge the international role played by countries such as Israel and the United States, whose stated commitments to democratic values and global responsibility have shaped geopolitical developments in the region. For Israel, the principle of Tikkun Olam — repairing the world, reflects a longstanding ethical tradition of contributing to global betterment.
Today, we reaffirm a simple truth: freedom must be consistent, universal, and unapologetic.
South Africans celebrate with the people of Iran and express hope for a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous future.
