Biohacking began in the early 2000s as an underground movement but is now practised by millions of people around the world, and has grown exponentially in South Africa. Biohacking is best described as the art and science of adapting and assessing your internal environment (your body) and external environment (where you live and work), and making the necessary changes to optimise your mind, body and soul. As a Christian, Steve stresses the importance of delighting in your purpose and being surrounded by a heathy community, and belief in the unchangeable trinitarian God.

Johannesburg-based professional biohacker and performance coach, Steve Stavs, believes that this DIY, self-health approach improves quality and longevity of life. “Biohacking equips you with the tools to transcend society’s stressors. While it sounds new to some, you’ve probably already biohacked yourself,” says Steve. “If you’ve checked your blood pressure or blood sugar levels and made lifestyle changes to improve those data points, then you’re a biohacker!”

As the podcast host of The Made To Thrive Show, which is now in the top two percent of podcasts globally ranked by Listen Notes, Steve’s podcasts have been collectively downloaded thousands of times. “I believe people are more aware now than ever of the state of their health, as we live through a pandemic and are looking to take accountability for it,” says Steve.

What spurred on the biohacking industry and what need is it meeting? “As a biohacker, we find that the lack of answers from traditional medicine to chronic conditions and ailments prompted us to research and implement our own life hacks,” adds Steve. With an honours degree in Science, Steve Stavs’ research has been heard by thousands of medical professionals around the world, as well as executives, athletes and ambitious everyday individuals. “The most dominant requests I receive relate to performance and mental cognition:  How can I perform better in less time? How do I prevent sickness & disease? How do I deal with sickness and disease If I’m affected? How do I alleviate stress and anxiety?”

Through using objective data points gathered from tools such as blood tests, smart watches, smart rings, stress tests, food intolerance assessments, fatty acid profiles, heavy metal evaluations, and personality 360s, one can build up a ton of data which is then used to optimize your life.

Steve Stavs has completed 11 Comrades Marathons and coaches athletes by using a variety of data points to ensure adequate recovery and ultimate superhuman performance. The latest biotech equipment is also incorporated into a holistic lifestyle program that may include Blood-flow Modification bands and Infra-Red Sauna. Steve has researched and exclusively partnered with world class international companies who offer lifechanging interventions while ensuring safety and efficacy at the highest level.

Steve provides the hacks the tools and the tricks to help maintain one’s transformation without spending the time, resources and finance that you usually would to get the same results. “Change is scary and often hard; habits are also hard to adopt into your life and maintain. A simple, yet unknown technique like breathing in and out through your nose in fact reduces cortisol and stress levels,” adds Steve. It’s the combination of ancient wisdom techniques like breath work, together with the science and research of hacks like blue blocking glasses which results in a significant improvement in performance and health.

While the research has shown that the number two predictor of longevity is close social ties, the number one predictor is social integration. “To have social integration, your unique purpose needs to be integrated into the healthy communities you live and engage with.”
