Tereo is a special-purpose school, based in Victoria Road, Somerset West. It was founded in 1999 for street children and children at risk in the Helderberg Basin, who for some social/traumatic event or circumstance, fell out of the formal education system or have never been part of it.
Our students (Gr1-7) face extreme poverty, daily exposure to violence, and other traumatic experiences. For many, Tereo is their only source of stability, food, and clothing, with some children even bearing the responsibility of managing their households.
Tereo Project School transforms the lives of these children by breaking the cycle of poverty and building self-sufficient, contributing members of society. A robust education is complemented by professional health care, nutritious meals, psychosocial counselling, family assistance and community outreach.
Throughout the year, and due to the generosity of various supermarkets, we are able to rely on food donation programs to support our students’ families. However, these programs are paused from December to February, leaving many families in need. To bridge this gap, we need to provide each family with a food parcel containing essential items.
We are therefore asking our readers to help us provide parcels with staples like rice, samp, baked beans, tuna, corned beef, cooking oil, sugar, coffee, peanut butter, porridge, maize meal, and nutritious soup packs. Any contributions, would be invaluable in helping sustain these families during this critical time.
Your support would have a direct impact in providing security and nourishment to families, who, with continuity of support over the Christmas period, will be able to maintain their children’s education next year.
Donations can be made directly to Tereo School, Victoria Road, Somerset West (next to the old driving testing station) during office hours. Please phone 021 851 4005 or 0826789077 to ensure someone will be available to receive your gift.
We are deeply grateful for any assistance you can offer.
Thank you.
Charlotte Rawlings, Trustee Tereo School
