The African Christian Democratic Party is appalled by the recent crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele, National Commissioner General Khehla Sithole, and Major General Norman Sekhukhune, in Parliament today.
South Africa is a country at war with itself, and in serious crisis. Government has failed in its most basic responsibility – which is to protect its citizens.
It is sad to see that a total of 21,022 South Africans were murdered between April 2018 and March this year. Of this number, 736 murders were committed by children.
It is worrying to note that in the last three years sexual offenses have gone up by 4.6%. Over the reported period alone there were 52 420 cases of sexual offenses reported.
It is reported that at least 55 rape complaints against police officers were investigated between April and September in 2018, according to the 2018/19 annual report of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). This is six more than over the same period in 2017.
Of the 55 rapes by police officers, 32 were by off-duty policemen and 23 happened when the policemen were on duty, up by 5%.
The Police Service must be cleaned up first, before we can seriously fight crime. It cannot be that those who are entrusted to protect and serve are the ones who prey on our people.
The ANC-led government must acknowledge its failures and make space for a new Godly and capable government that will be serious about protecting its people and winning the fight against crime.
