At the age of 40, I was in the prime of my life and an avid cyclist. I had won quite a few prizes over the years, but as time went on, the prizes didn’t matter anymore, I cycled more for the purpose of staying fit and healthy. I was good friends with Lindsay, a devoted Christian who was severely disabled and confined to a wheelchair.
Two friends on a tandem
The thought struck me that perhaps we could cycle together on a tandem bike. On his own, Lindsay wouldn’t be able to control a regular bike, but on a tandem I was there to stabilise the bike. We tried it on a demonstration model – and, miraculously, he was able to pedal! Lindsay was overjoyed, and our rides became the highlight of his week.
Supernatural intervention
We took on quite a few long-distance races and were fairly competitive. One problem, however, was that Lindsay had to urinate frequently. We would have to stop, I’d hold the bike, and someone would need to help him get off and on again. During a challenging recent cycle race – the Cape Town Cycle Tour – a miracle occurred.
No one to help
Chapman’s Peak was closed, and we had to climb Ou Kaapse Weg. We had already been cycling for four hours and were both exhausted when Lindsay said he couldn’t hold it any longer, he urgently needed to get off. There was no “refreshing station” nearby, and no other cyclists in sight to assist. However, as we went around the last bend, I saw a man standing a bit further ahead on the side of the road.
God sends an angel
When we reached the man, it seemed as though he had been waiting for us. He knew exactly what to do and helped an exhausted Lindsay off the bike while I held the tandem steady. Once Lindsay was done, the man helped him back onto the bike and fastened his cycling shoes securely. I could start pedalling again for the final, toughest part of the hill. To my surprise, I could feel a very hard push from behind to help us get going. When I turned around to thank the man for his help, no one was there. We both immediately realised that the man was, in fact, an angel. There is no other explanation for what happened that day.
