Yeshua was the greatest example of a transformational leader. He was the epitome of humility – One who sacrificed for others. Today, God is looking to position Kingdom transformational leaders in the nations. A transformational leader is a servant leader. You cannot be a true transformational leader without displaying servant leadership behaviour. There are many who talk the talk of transformational leadership, but few who actually exhibit the traits.
Servant leadership
In Matthew 20, we read about the mother of the sons of Zebedee (James and John), who was trying to negotiate with Yeshua for her sons to occupy elevated positions of glory next to Him. Yeshua was clear in His response. He said, “whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” In this portion of scripture, Yeshua was emphasising the importance of servant leadership.
Yeshua didn’t just talk about servant leadership, He actively demonstrated it by washing the feet of His disciples. Biblical and transformational leadership is about serving others. It’s about walking the walk, not just talking the talk. True leaders must understand that they are called to serve, first and foremost, and not to be celebrities who want to be enthroned.
A transformational leader develops others
A transformational leader sees potential in others and builds them up. They are able to recognise the redemptive gifts of others, working to ensure that those gifts are developed and released into the communities. When the disciples first came to Jesus, they had professions, but were still lacking in many respects. Simon Peter was uncouth and had no relationship skills. He cut off somebody’s ear. He denied Jesus and had no backbone. Nonetheless, Yeshua saw something in Peter and developed him. This was a person who eventually preached so powerfully that, on the day of Pentecost, 3000 people were saved. A transformational leader sees capacity, gifts, and talents in others and uses that to build strong teams for the common good and benefit of all. They activate gifts in others so that the lives of all are transformed. They ensure the active participation of all.
Transforming communities
Transformational leaders take time to teach, train, and equip families on how to use Kingdom principles to protect and benefit their families. They understand that the family is the pillar of society and that dysfunctional families will translate into dysfunctional communities and nations. The needs of the community will always be near and dear to the heart of a transformational leader. The impact of transformation must go beyond the walls of church buildings. Transformation must permeate into the community and feed the hungry, quench those who thirst, clothe those who lack, and comfort the foreigner and those who are imprisoned and sick – in line with Matthew 25:35-40.
Transforming the marketplace
To a large extent the Church, the Ecclesia, has limited its impact and neglected its mandate to be salt and light, especially in the marketplace. In this season, transformational leaders must ensure that they implement Kingdom strategies like Joseph and Daniel did to bring Kingdom transformation in the marketplace.
Transforming nations
Transformational leaders facilitate the transformation of nations. They disciple nations in line with Matthew 28:19-20 and take the nations by the hand to guide them into their redemptive purposes. God is looking for transformational leaders that He can position to take up leadership posts in this season. Yeshua was the greatest example of a transformational leader; may we be more like Him.
