The pervasive and corrosive evil of corruption
In many nations around the world, corruption is a bigger pandemic than any virus. Billions are siphoned out of nations coffers annually and the Special investigative Units that have been established to fight corruption do not seem to be making much headway. Close to USD$150 billion is said to be lost to corruption annually in Africa alone.
Effects of corruption
The effects of corruption are wide and rampant. Corruption affects individuals, organisations and nations as a whole. It results in loss of revenue, poverty and hunger, criminality, stifled foreign investment, compromised rule of law and a demoralised and hopeless nation. There must be limitations placed so that corruption does not become a part of a nations culture. Institutions and movements must be created and maintained to sensitise people and the nations about the terrible effects of corruption on a nation and its people. Unashamedly Ethical is one such movement.
Who is UnAshamedly Ethical?
“Unashamedly Ethical is a global movement of individuals and organisations guided by a founding vision to transform society by taking a stand for ethics, values and clean living”
Founded by Graham Power and headed up by CEO Hermann (Harry) Loubser , the goal of this movement is to “develop an unashamedly ethical culture among this generation of leaders”.
How do they accomplish their mission?
The Mission statement of UE is to:
- “Take on systemic corruption by creating a platform for ethical business to flourish
- Equip and empower leaders to have a positive impact in society by taking a stand for ethics, values and clean living
- Connect like-minded individuals to form a community that develops a local model of success enabling positive transformation in society”
Focus on Youth
Tribe is the youth arm of the Unashamedly Ethical global movement of individuals and organizations and plays a crucial role in this movement by raising up and mobilising a generation of young people to take a stand for ethics and values and to be the driving force behind this movement among their peers. Proverbs 22:6 admonishes elders to conduct proper teaching and training whilst individuals are still young. A desire to live righteously and ethically must be inculcated in people when they are still young.
Unashamedly Ethical Awards
On the night of Saturday, September 2022 UnAshamedly Ethical held a beautiful Gala dinner and awards ceremony at the Lord Charles hotel in Somerset West in Cape Town. A number of international and local guests who came in for the Economic Summit (Africa) held from 13-16 September were honoured and presented with awards. Others flew in especially for the awards ceremony. Awards were given out for UE Global Ambassadors, for efforts that individuals had made towards facilitating Peace & Reconciliation, for Community impact and for Justice and Accountability, amongst others.
Every person has a role to play in the fight against corruption. It starts with us. Let us be encouraged to take up ownership in this fight against corruption and to play our part. If you have ever paid a bribe to a police officer or any other government official, then you are guilty of corruption. Be encouraged to take a stand against corruption by taking the UE pledge and committing to a corrupt free organisation that takes a stand for ethics, clean values and clean living.
