FEBA’s radio station manager partner in Mali, M’Bimba Dembele, has requested urgent prayers are needed for the country and its people while they prepare for war against ECOWAS (Economic Community of West Africa States), the regional organization of 15 West African countries. ECOWAS’s main purpose is to promote economic cooperation among member states and has threatened economic and diplomatic sanctions on Mali’s military rulers for postponing the elections.
In recent years Mali has been caught up in a cycle of never-ending conflict. Mali’s army have already defeated the Jihadists, but the country is now experiencing serious problems with the international community. In recent years, Mali has struggled to maintain political stability. A coup d’état in 2012, followed by military intervention; ongoing uprisings by rebels and extremist groups have left the people vulnerable; and in August 2020 the president was forced to resign, following a military coup. On 10 January this year an online magazine, The Conversation, reported under the heading, “Rising instability in Mali raises fears about role of private Russian military group” that “tensions are mounting in West Africa as Mali resists pressure from the region, the EU and US…”
Against this background, prayers are needed for a nation that has been plagued by hardship for far too long. The country is landlocked, and the people suffer from severe poverty. The recent social political crisis is just some of the major problems the citizens must cope with daily. Adding to that soil erosion, deforestation, shortened water supplies, hazardous living conditions and huge loss of pastureland, and one begins to realize the measure of hardship citizens must cope with.
We know God is in control and He has shown His mercy and love through the many interventions in the lives of ordinary people in Mali. FEBA will continue to make a difference with its radio ministry in Mali and we look forward to keeping you up to date.
