Years of planning and praying have paid off: FEBA Mozambique’s seventh radio station, Victory FM, is officially on air in Cuamba.
The city, which plays a prominent role in travel between Malawi and Mozambique, has long been the focus of FEBA Mozambique Director Bright Sonjera’s aspirations. “The population here has increased with every census,” he says. “We are focusing not only on the Yao people but also on the Makhuwa, the Ngoni, and the Nyanja – there are a lot of unreached people, and radio will help them hear the gospel.”
With a tower that stands 52 metres tall, and stronger transmitters, Victory FM is FEBA’s biggest station in the Niassa province, with a broadcasting range of up to 350 km. Its sister station in Lichinga, Radio Fountain of Truth (FOT), unexpectedly contributed to Victory FM’s establishment when it aired a discipleship program that reached listeners in Cuamba, more than 300 km away.
“People became interested in Jesus and listened to Radio FOT’s programs,” says Director Sonjera, “but due to the distance, the signal was poor, so they asked me if we could build a station in Cuamba to save lost souls for Christ.”
The name “Victory FM” was chosen in response to the many souls won through Radio FOT’s discipleship program. After coming to Christ, these people were so earnest in their desire for a Christian radio station that they made the bricks for its building themselves. Local artisans worked tirelessly to prepare the station for its inaugural broadcast, which took place on 21 February.
Victory FM is now broadcasting in eight languages.
