Unite180 uGroups are the vibrant core of Unite180 Church, a Christian ministry founded in 2013 by Pastors David and Chanelle Grobler in South Africa. The concept emerged out of frustration with traditional church models that often fell short of achieving meaningful discipleship and active engagement of everyday Christians. Motivated by a deep desire to see believers truly embody the Biblical vision outlined in 1 Corinthians 12 – where members actively participate as part of the Body of Christ – uGroups were created. The framework for uGroups was developed to cultivate genuine spiritual community and fellowship, intentionally empowering believers to carry God’s presence into every aspect of daily life. What began as a small youth ministry with just a few uGroups has now grown into a global movement. In 2015, approximately 750 people gathered weekly in homes. By 2025, nearly 9000 people regularly participate across more than 1000 homes in South Africa and 11 other nations. The church’s impact is evident, with baptisms surging from 261 in 2015 to over 2100 in 2024, and more than 1100 in just the first four months of 2025 alone. Weekly testimonies of healing, salvation, and supernatural provision continually affirm the spiritual vitality and effectiveness of uGroups.
Not just connection – Kingdom formation
uGroups are more than social gatherings or Bible studies. They create spaces where believers can grow spiritually, mature in their faith, and become actively involved in ministry. Following the Biblical call to equip believers “for the work of ministry” (Eph 4:12), uGroups offer practical ways to walk out discipleship and serve others. Modelled on the early Church (Acts 2:46), uGroups meet regularly for fellowship, joy, and growth. These gatherings help believers stay accountable, develop spiritually, and grow as leaders, ensuring each person takes part and contributes to God’s Kingdom.
Empowerment through active participation
uGroups are committed to helping believers move from being passive observers to active contributors in God’s work. Guided by Paul’s exhortation (Eph 4:16), each participant is encouraged to join in by contributing to discussions, praying for others, using spiritual gifts (1 Cor 12), and building faith-based communities. Within uGroups, the Biblical “one another” commands – such as to “care for one another” (1 Cor 12:25) and to “build up one another” (1 Thes 5:11) – are central to daily life. While many small groups focus on social connection, uGroups aim for deeper spiritual growth and meaningful ministry. Their mission reflects Jesus’ words: “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matt 4:19). Discipleship is hands-on, believers do not only receive – they lead others to Christ and baptise new believers.
Spirit-led and structured
Each uGroup meeting follows a simple, flexible flow, with room for the Holy Spirit to lead. Warm hospitality helps everyone feel welcome, reflecting the heart of God’s family. Meetings include time for praise and worship, followed by open discussion on Scripture. Leaders act as facilitators – guiding the conversation with humility and Biblical clarity, without taking on the role of teachers or authorities. This approach keeps the groups accessible for everyone. Spiritual gifts, including prayer and prophecy, are encouraged within Biblical boundaries, always aligned with the Word and the Spirit. Predictive prophecy and manipulative practices are not allowed and are actively corrected, helping to ensure that ministry remains edifying, safe, and Spirit-led. Meetings end with ministry time, where believers pray for one another and put faith into action. Although there is a structure, the focus remains on encountering God, not following a rigid format.
Leaders’ experiences and testimonies
Testimonies from more than 1000 uGroup leaders reveal the heart of these gatherings. Leaders often share stories of life-changing encounters, heartfelt worship, meaningful Scripture discussions, healings, and salvations. More than anything, they describe creating safe, grace-filled environments where believers can grow, be vulnerable, and mature in their faith. uGroups are not mini-church services or teaching platforms. Leaders help keep the focus clear by avoiding distractions, unnecessary debates, and self-promotion. Instead, they foster a culture of honour, humility, and mutual respect. Many leaders have their own stories of transformation – from quiet observers to confident leaders. They share about finding their calling, baptisms, and leading others to Christ for the first time. One leader summed it up: “uGroups turn people from watchers into workers. They do not just hear the Word – they carry it.”

Joining a uGroup does not require perfection or deep theological knowledge – only a willing heart, open to grow, explore, and experience Christ more fully. uGroups are more than meetings. They are places where believers connect, grow together in faith, and see God at work in their lives and communities. At their core, uGroups are committed to lifting up Jesus Christ as Lord, building His Church, and staying true to Biblical foundations. They are places where truth is upheld, grace is extended, and lives are changed by the presence of God.
