Americans have a tradition of standing for their national anthem as a symbol of unity and patriotism before a sports match. Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem, arguing that he could not show pride in the flag of a country that oppressed black people. The symbol was adopted by the Black Lives Matter Movement, resulting in half the team standing and the other half kneeling thus creating division – and then BLM demanded to impose it on all sports teams through the world – including now the South African cricket team. So now those who don’t take the knee are accused of creating division.
Now there are many ironies in this situation:
1. Kaepernick is fabulously wealthy far above the income level of the average pale skinned person in America or sports stars in other countries. He could instead positively use some of his wealth for social upliftment of African Americans or use his popularity to promote good behaviours like family virtues that lead to social upliftment but instead he supports a revolutionary movement.
2. Those of African American blood (including Kaepernick) are over-represented in sports requiring rapid reaction muscle movement such as American football, sprints and basketball, which rather undermines his allegation of racist oppression. African Americans and their parent genetic source West Africans statistically out-perform East Africans, South Africans, Europeans and Asians at such sports, but America gives them more of a chance to excel and profit than West Africa.
3. Kaepernick was brought up as an adopted child in a European American family, which again rather undermines the narrative of an overwhelmingly racist society.
4. This ‘taking the knee’ is being demanded in favour of unity – while the original action of Kaepernick was to sow disunity against America’s prior long tradition promoting unity via patriotism.
5. The goal of “equal opportunity” to which American has developed in stages assumes that you can compete in politics regardless of your religion; that you can compete in sport regardless of your politics; you can compete in business regardless of your family background. The new BLM/Cultural Marxist paradigm is that you can’t. Your politics determines whether you are allowed to compete in sport. What then rational basis to they have for racial equal opportunity at all? The system seems set to implode.
6. Kaepernick’s protest and the growth of the BLM movement took place while an African American Barak Obama was president of America. Now if the system was so racist why did they elect him and when he was there why didn’t he fix it?
One could maybe excuse an individual sports star for not being able to fact check statistics on the allegation that the police are systematically targeting African Americans – but when the professional bodies of world sport cannot do that fact checking then we have a problem.
So now if everyone shifts from an old unity of standing to a new unity of kneeling – is that supposed to create long term unity. The problem with all Marxist revolutionary movements is the dilemma of what they do once they have achieved power and thus the motivation of ‘revolution’ is gone. Sadly, what has happened in Mao’s China, in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe and leftist universities is that they create new mythical enemies which require another internal revolution to overthrow. The momentum of revolutionary political movements is based on overthrowing power structures.
Now the other counter argument is that should we not just redeem the symbol? For example, Christmas has some pagan roots in the winter solstice, but we celebrate a Christian event on the same day. The problem with this argument is that firstly Cultural Marxism/Black Lives Matter is a very real live modern threat. It is not a piece of history like the winter solstice, nor even recent history like those who wear ‘Soviet brand’ clothing the Soviet Union. We do not want to lend strength to this new totalitarian movement.
Another difficulty is that despite it’s many flaws America has provided a system working better than most of the alternative political systems around the world – and that system allows for internal reform. While its easy to protest the flaws, refusing to stand with the anthem and flag itself – means rejecting the democratic system and opting for change via revolution and Marxist force. Thus taking the knee stands for de-legitimising the system of American constitutional democracy. And that de-legitimisation paves the way for Marxist cultural revolutionaries to impose a new order not based on freedom or democratic constitutional process, but on demand – and that cultural revolution is already starting to impact not just sport but every educational institution and corporate.
