In this season, it seems the headlines are dominated by war and violence. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, as well as the war in Ukraine – now well into its second year – are continually on our minds. And right here in South Africa, violent crime remains a serious and escalating problem, with the per capita murder rate for 2022-2023 reaching its highest point in 20 years.
Sheltering children from the world
As parents, we don’t want our kids to live in a bubble. They need to know that the world can be a difficult and dangerous place. But we need to shelter them from the unfiltered horrors of war, especially when they’re younger. While adults have the capacity to comprehend and emotionally process this kind of disturbing material, children do not. It’s important to limit your family’s consumption of violent and war-related news coverage when kids are around. If you’re unsure about how much your kids can handle, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Turn off the TV or put the phones away and get them involved in a different activity.
Making children feel safe
At the most basic level, young children need to know that they are safe. If they’ve been upset by viewing war-related footage, you can counter their fears by keeping as normal a routine as possible in their daily lives. Try taking some extra time before bed just to talk or read together. Help them focus on what is true and beautiful.
Processing traumatising footage
A special note is warranted for those using social media. When the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted in October, numerous graphic videos circulated via X, WhatsApp, TikTok, and other social media platforms. These clips included bloody and violent footage that is too extreme for most adults to handle, much less children. If your children (or you!) were exposed to this material, I encourage you to speak with a pastor or counsellor who can help you process it.
Pointing to Jesus
As Christians, we know that a day is coming when wars and suffering will cease. Until then, and with violence dominating the headlines, let us point our families toward the Prince of Peace, who said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27).
