While we acknowledge and appreciate the government’s efforts in trying to minimize the negative impact of Covid-19 on the livelihoods of South Africans by providing a little bit of social relief funding to some sectors of the society, we caution the government not to discriminate against the church leaders.
CHANGE wants to remind the President that these are the same leaders you run to when in trying times like this. You called for prayers and you always end your Covid-19 speech with ‘May God Bless South Africa‘. These are the same leaders shepherding the 86% plus of South Africa’s population. The very leaders keeping the country’s social cohesion intact.
It will be an irreversible error to ignore them and to exclude them from the economic relief program. The truth is the majority of them are in dire need as they rely on the weekly donations which are no longer collected now due to the lockdown.
It is for this reason that CHANGE calls on the President to assist the destitute church leaders.
We also want to call on those callous government officials and councilors who are repeatedly enriching themselves from food parcels meant for the poor to desist from these satanic conducts. It’s a bad thing to thrive over the country’s tears. This is time to practice UBUNTU and not thuggery. This also raises concerns over the safety and the accurate usage of the billions donated to the Solidarity Fund as it seems even the pandemic doesn’t deter the mischievous elements from looting. We ask the President to ensure stringent measures are put in place to protect the looting and the mismanagement of this fund.
