On 16 June 2026 South Africa observed “Youth Day” commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1976 student uprising against Bantu education. After 32 years of democracy, the youth struggle persists under mass unemployment and a failing public education system.
Carol Paton writes, “It is a deep and bitter irony that those left worse off 50 years after the June 1976 uprising are the black youth of our townships. With 60% of youth unemployed and few prospects of employment, we are teetering on the edge of a tinder box again.”
The ANC led government that promised young people a “better life for all” not only failed the nation’s youth but every citizen who hoped the new democratic South Africa will herald an end to race-based politics and launch an era of equality, justice and opportunity for all.

Tragically, however, this dream remains elusive for millions of citizens as self-serving politicians transformed the promise of South Africa into a nightmare of rampant corruption, mismanagement of state resources, failing education and healthcare and soaring crime.
The ANC regime dumbed down education, then manipulated matriculant results to present a positive view of declining education standards. The 1976 Uprising was essentially protesting poor education. It is worse now after 32 years of ANC misrule.
The ANC’s appalling mismanagement of South Africa’s education system is no more apparent than in the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The scheme was created to fund the higher education of millions of historically disadvantaged students.
But true to form, the ANC’s cadre deployment policies ensured NSFAS failed its key objectives. The scheme has been placed under administration for the third time since 2018. Since its inception, NSFAS has been plagued by corruption, mismanagement and policy failures – robbing millions of young people of quality higher education.
SA universities are withholding 188,209 student graduation certificates because of outstanding debt. Self-funded students and those funded by NSFAS owe universities a staggering total of R55 billion. The NSFAS crisis threatens to derail SA’s education goals.
Professor Smit of Stellenbosch University writes, “Its time to overhaul the NSFAS as we know it.” He reveals a litany of governance failures that not only seriously undermine the nation’s education ambitions but threatens the sustainability of South Africa’s universities.
A well-managed and excellent education system is one of the keys to unlock SA’s vast potential. SA lost 345,000 jobs between Jan and March 2026. The economy is not growing fast enough to create the jobs we need to absorb the millions of unemployed youth.
President Ramaphosa – mostly detached from reality and delusional – is too preoccupied with protecting his “reputation” from being “irreparably harmed” by an impeachment inquiry into his shady forex dealings – to focus on the nations growing education crisis.
Soaring unemployment worsened by a stagnant economy also contributes to xenophobic violence. Millions denied employment opportunities by failed ANC policies have blamed migrants for their circumstances. Anti-migrant groups set a 30 June deadline for illegal migrants to leave SA. The ANC led government seems to have run out of ideas.
President Ramaphosa believes his 30-minute live television address to the nation will solve the illegal migrant crisis and stop the threatened violence. He also believes bigger budgets not better management will solve the education crisis. Ramaphosa is not fit to govern.
The annual “Youth Day” observance that commemorates the 1976 Student Uprising against Bantu education remains an empty platitude by a corrupt and self-serving ANC regime until it achieves the quality education for all so many youth sacrificed their lives for.
