For a long time, reliable healthcare was out of reach for the community in the remote Chikuluma area of southern Malawi, but help has arrived. Doctors for Life International is now building a permanent clinic in this area through its Aid to Africa program. The clinic, which will open soon, reflects an enduring commitment to a community where even basic healthcare is difficult to access. The clinic will bring essential medical care closer to people who have had little, if any, access to it, helping ensure long-term health improvements.

The Christian-based organisation’s medical assistance to the neglected Chikuluma community was never intended as a one-off undertaking; volunteer teams began outreaches as early as 2016. The teams used Chikuluma in Malawi’s Machinga district as their base and, over time, provided regular healthcare, medication, medical supplies, and medical training while sharing the Word of God with the community. The team initially provided services from a mobile facility and later from a shipping container, while continuing to develop plans for long-term infrastructure—the vision after community leaders requested the Doctors for Life team to provide more permanent assistance. Built on years of trust, the new clinic will ultimately turn a shared vision into reality: the long-term vision of building permanent clinics in remote communities across Africa where healthcare is scarce and often inaccessible.

In 2019, the Doctors for Life team deployed a shipping-container clinic in Chikiluma and began providing medicines, medical supplies, and routine healthcare services. In 2022, they distributed mosquito nets and medical supplies in Chikuluma, then travelled to their Mozambique clinic for another outreach. Medical volunteer teams continued to visit the Chikuluma community until 2024, when they had to suspend their medical work due to restrictions. Those restrictions were later lifted, enabling the team to proceed with plans to build a permanent clinic. The team finalised the registration of a non-profit healthcare organisation in Malawi, allowing it to acquire land and begin constructing a permanent clinic that meets the requirements of the Malawian Ministry of Health.
The team established the clinic through sustained engagement with the community and in response to its request for long-term medical support. Short-term medical outreaches have now evolved into a more permanent medical facility where appropriate surgical procedures can be performed.
Doctors for Life was founded in 1991 “to uphold the sanctity of life, promote sound scientific practices, and preserve Judeo-Christian ethics within the medical profession.” Dr Abu van Eeden is currently the chief executive, assisted by a support team. The organisation has more than 1,500 members worldwide (medical practitioners, dentists, and veterinarians) who share these values.
The organisation has a long history of humanitarian projects and evangelism in Africa. Since 2001, it has provided free care to 250,000 patients across seven countries while sharing the love of Jesus with them. During these outreach missions, volunteer teams conduct medical examinations, provide general treatments, offer maternity care and dental procedures, and distribute eyeglasses. Beyond these medical services, the organisation prioritises restoring sight.

This brings profound change to the lives of those who have been blind for years, and many moving stories are shared. Medical outreaches typically last two to four weeks, involving long journeys over poor roads and medical work in extremely challenging conditions.
Doctors for Life’s primary goal—to establish permanent medical facilities offering free healthcare in resource-limited areas—is progressing steadily. The Centro de Saúde de Sihane, which opened in Zavora, Mozambique, in 2009, was the organisation’s first permanent medical clinic. Since its inception, the clinic has assisted more than 24,000 patients annually. The clinic in Malawi is the second permanent facility in Southern Africa and forms part of a sustainable healthcare model that ensures a lasting presence in the region.
