Kristine and Michael are orphaned siblings who live in the vicinity of Bacolod City in the Philippines. During the pandemic, the two of them lived alone, spending most of their days looking for food and ways to survive. But they were not content to become trapped in a rut. While Michael helped their uncle to gather bamboo for sale on Saturdays, Kristine would record the educational drama airing on FEBA’s radio station in the region, 1233 DYVS. When Michael came home, he would also listen to the lesson.
In this way, Kristine and Michael completed their Junior High School (grades 7-10) education.
The Philippines Department of Education created the Alternative Learning System for people who were unable to finish school through formal education, either because they dropped out or because they never had access to a school. While much of the Alternative Learning System’s education happens at community centres or libraries, FEBA has been airing its program since 2018.
“It’s important to have the Alternative Learning System on radio, because it serves as a supplemental learning intervention for our learners,” says Yolly Salem, an education program specialist with the Department of Education in Negros Occidental, who serves as the presenter for the Alternative Learning System program on FEBA Radio. “For example, if a learner says, ‘Ma’am, I can’t attend because of this or that,’ we have a back-up plan for them … [they can] listen every Saturday on 1233 DYVS. We have a session there.”
This collaboration is but one example of FEBA Philippines’ commitment to share the gospel with listeners while also helping to meet their practical needs. As Director Luis Castillo says, “Education is a vast undertaking that needs all the help it can get. Broadcasts can do so much to amplify the efforts of our educators.”
