Tropical Storm “Freddy” has caused devastation across Mozambique and Malawi, killing over 320 people and that number is rising at an alarming rate. In addition to the saddening death toll, thousands have been injured, separated from their loved ones, and lost their homes.
The cyclone first hit central Mozambique on Saturday the 11th of March, causing widespread flooding and ripping roofs off buildings before moving inland to Malawi, where it caused landslides and flash floods.
The true extent of the damage and loss of life is still being assessed, with power supplies and phone signals cut off in some areas. The storm has been described as one of the strongest ever recorded in the southern hemisphere and could be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone. The situation is critical in Zambezia province in Mozambique, where communications with all regions have been lost.
The storm has also exacerbated existing problems, such as Malawi’s deadliest ever cholera outbreak and Mozambique’s year-long rainfall in just four weeks. Climate scientists attribute the increased strength of tropical storms to fossil fuel-driven climate change, which transfers heat energy from warm seawater into the atmosphere. The humanitarian agencies present in the affected areas do not currently have the capacity to deal with the disaster.
Our station director in Mozambique has informed us that our radio tower has collapsed on our Zambezia radio station, Impact Radio, due to the monstrous Freddy which will prevent the team to broadcast the Good News until the station is restored.

Both the FEBA Mozambique and FEBA Malawi teams are working around the clock to assist wherever they can but face numerous challenges such as the constant mudslides and powerful water sweeping people away.
Please pray that God will protect the listeners and teams in both countries as they face this horrifying situation.
