In 2009, Louie Giglio released a DVD called, How Great Is Our God. This DVD went ‘viral’ and changed the lives of millions of Christians around the world. It was revolutionary content, showing God’s majesty throughout outer space. Louie was one of the first preachers to bring science into his message, which sparked global interest. This DVD was shown in Sunday Schools, Bible studies, Cell groups, churches, and even included in many high schools’ curricula. I recall sitting in my school’s classroom, watching the DVD with my classmates. We were so fascinated by the comparison of the sizes of the planets and the stars. This DVD also sparked a worship movement, as Chris Tomlin released his song, “How Great Is Our God.” Now, a little over a decade later, Louie has brought out a children’s book based on this message.
Who is Louie Giglio?
Louie is the pastor of Passion City Church in Atlanta, USA. He is also the founder of the Passion events that occur around the world, and has held two in South Africa already. These events draw millions of young people and share truths from God’s word, combining science, worship, and preaching. I had the privilege to have lunch with Louie when he was in Cape Town recently, and had the opportunity to hear from his heart.
Q. When can we expect the next Passion event in South Africa?
We have not confirmed anything yet, but we are hoping to come towards the end of 2020, or early 2021, God-willing. We love South Africa and we believe in this country. God has opened the doors for ministry here. We didn’t plan to fall in love with this nation, but God had a plan.
Q. What do you love most about our country?
The spirit of the people is incredible. I know that a lot of people focus on the negatives in South Africa, but coming from America, this is really the most beautiful country. Cape Town is the hidden gem of the whole world – on any given day it could easily be the most beautiful city on this earth. The combination of the mountains, the water, the wine country, it is all just stunning. But my love is more for the spirit of this nation. This is a resilient nation that, against all odds, keeps moving towards the future. God has a plan here – I think He has a specific calling for this nation, these people. God is touching this nation, which will in turn touch the nations up in Africa. You feel that and sense that when you are here.

Q. You have just brought out your newest book for children. How did your passion for outer space develop into this?
Many years ago, Matt [Redman] and I always used to chat about space. It was a topic that really interested us. I started piecing together these Indescribable and How Great Is Our God messages when I saw how much the youth responded to this topic. I remember leading a youth camp – I was looking for ways to keep the kids interested. I would start each message with a picture from the Hubble Space Telescope, and I realised how much the kids loved the images. They would take out their phones and take photos of the screens. I took that encouragement and built a ministry out of it. The videos were never meant to be a scientific approach, but they were meant to show God’s wonder and creation, to share the awe. The message was created to show God’s magnitude, how big He is, and how much He loves us. It is about worship. Fast forward a decade, God placed a desire in my heart to turn this into a children’s book.
Q. And what can parents expect from this book?
We want to help kids share in this awe and wonder. This book is targeted to 6-12 year olds. It consists of 100 devotions, based on God’s magnificent universe. I share insights and facts about space and time, earth and weather, the human body, animals, plants, and so much more. In the future, we have an exciting plan to bring out an animated kids movie that touches on the same themes, sharing Christ’s wonder with the kids. God is using us to bring these messages – I don’t take any credit for this. This book is available from all leading bookstores in South Africa.
