State facilitated corruption under the Ramaphosa administration appears to persist despite government promises to combat fraud, theft and the looting of public funds. The initial euphoria that followed Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as President of South Africa has all but dissipated as new reports of state corruption, fraud and theft emerge on an almost weekly basis.
Former DA leader, Mmusi Maimane said it best in response to the disastrous Zuma presidency, “We don’t have a Zuma problem, we have a ANC problem. This fact was underscored by ANC Secretary General, Ace Magashule who said, “Jacob Zuma must not and cannot be solely blamed for the corruption and malfeasance that took place on his watch because the ANC acts as a united body and never allowed him to act on his own.”
In other words, the ANC acts and governs as a collective. This means the rampant and ongoing corruption, theft, fraud, cronyism and destruction of State Owned Enterprises is facilitated by the ruling party as a “collective” and no single party official can claim credit. The party philosophy therefore reduces Ramaphosa to a loyal cadre, deployed primarily to execute the will of the collective. The ANC can recall Ramaphosa whenever he defies its wishes.
If you are not yet convinced the ANC has robbed the country blind, please read through the testimony at the State Capture Inquiry – it is truly shocking. Senior government officials became multi-millionaires overnight through tender fraud and illicit kick-backs for “irregular” and even failed state projects.
The Auditor-General’s report revealed only 8 percent of SA’s municipalities received clean audits. The rest are rendered ineffective by corruption and gross incompetence. Despite severe budget constraints exacerbated by the lockdown, ANC led municipalities wasted R32 billion of tax payer funds.
Whistle blowers are already warning of massive corruption in the administration of the R500 billion Covid-19 relief fund. Millions are fraudulently re-directed to private accounts. Sadly, the ANC legitimised the culture of looting and theft.
Two suspended ANC officials were recently reinstated despite being implicated in the VBS Bank looting scandal. The ANC protects its own. Several other party officials implicated in fraud and corruption enjoy top government positions. Alarmingly, although the NPA arrested several bank officials, not one state official was arrested. The NPA is still severely underfunded and understaffed.
The Institute for Race Relations (IRR) released a report indicating ANC misrule is a result of its totalitarian philosophy of controlling all aspects of the state. In short, like the Chinese Communist Party, the ANC craves total control of the economy, the means of production (land), education, health, the judiciary, the media, the Church, NGO’s and other democratic institutions.
The National Health Insurance policy will give government total control of health care, Land Expropriation without Compensation will give government total control of land, the Single Marriage Policy will give government total control over marriage, Hate Crimes laws will give government total control over what can be preached and UN influenced and controlled education policies will give government total control over children’s minds and what can be taught.
A Politico article argues, the lockdown has exposed the ANC’s true nature. There is much talk about a “new economic model.” A model that fits government’s “Radical Economic Transformation” mantra – which is code for the brazen theft of privately owned business and property.
The only thing standing between the ANC and its allies fulfilling its Marxist ideological plans for South Africa is a God-fearing and freedom loving civil society. That oft repeated liberation term, “The people shall govern” has again become critically pertinent.
The Constitutional Court provided civil society a ray of light when it instructed Parliament to amend the Electoral Act to allow independent candidates to contest the General Elections. The new Electoral System has the potential to break the stranglehold of political parties in provincial legislators and Parliament. The ANC’s dominance has undoubtedly led to massive abuse of power and the callous disdain for the rights and welfare of citizens.
However, as we approach the General Elections in 2024, civil society must join hands and resources to resist the ANC’s totalitarian aspirations. We must do this for the sake of South Africa’s unexplored potential and the unrealised hopes and dreams of its people. Left to its own devices, the ANC will destroy this beautiful country – its current trajectory leaves no doubt.
South Africa celebrates Mandela Day on 18 July. We must heed the words of former President, Nelson Mandela when he warned about potential ANC abuse, “If the ANC does to you what the apartheid government did to you, then you must do to the ANC what you did to the apartheid government.”
The true Church of Christ in partnership with democratic civil society groups must initiate discussions around the advantages presented by the proposed new Electoral System and the opportunities it will offer honest competent men and women to fulfil their destinies and rescue the nation from certain disaster.
How long will the Church and civil society stand by idly and watch the country edge toward the abyss? The Church has been reduced to mere spectators of the spiritual and moral decline of the nation. The Christian Church once mobilised against the evils of apartheid. Why is it silent now?
British Statesman, Edmund Burke said, “All that is necessary for evil to prosper is that good men do nothing.” Evil prospers in South Africa because good people are silent and inactive. It is time for the good people of South Africa to stand up and be counted. Your country needs you now!
