Family Policy Institute was invited to co-sign a Statement “Reaffirming Life and Family” (along with several international pro-family organisations), addressed to the 75th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly. The UN celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2020 and for the first time ever will conduct the General Assembly as a virtual event on 21 September.
The Statement reminds Member States that as the Covid-19 pandemic has taken lives and ravaged communities across the world, humanity has turned homeward for safety and solace in a poignant reminder of the preciousness of Life and Family – foundational pillars affirmed by powerful voices at the United Nations since its beginning.
Arlene and I were scheduled to attend the United Nations in New York this month as members of the “UN Family Rights Caucus.” In January 2020, the UN Committee on NGO’s granted Family Policy Institute (FPI) Special Consultative Status. This Status provides FPI access to UN Committees debating critical issues on life, family and freedom and to lobby key UN representatives.
We were also scheduled to participate in Family Research Council’s annual “Values Voters Summit” in Washington DC. I was given the honor of opening this event in prayer in 2018 and subsequently met US Vice-President, Mike Pence. However, the global Covid-19 pandemic changed all our plans.
Tragically, the global pandemic brought much suffering and misery to billions of people across the world. But the crisis also emphasised the sanctity and preciousness of life and the love, comfort and support of the natural family. People in every nation were suddenly confined to their family homes for extended periods during a time of intense fear, turmoil and uncertainty.
World governments launched unprecedented initiatives to save lives and protect people from infections. Entire cities were locked down for months. The dignity of life became a key focus of the world’s efforts. The family is the most basic unit of every society in the world. This truth came into sharp focus as billions of people found solace in the family during this crisis.
The events of the past seven months, although distressing, provides unique opportunities to Reset, Refocus and Restore. The Body of Christ must initiate new ways of doing things. We must earnestly pray and act with purpose to reset the cultural mandate by maintaining the focus on restoring the sanctity of life and the primacy of the natural family as the bedrock of society.
FPI, along with its international pro-family partners have urged the UN to revive the aspirations of its 1945 UN Charter to “Reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person.” Article 16 of the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights” recognised the Family as the “natural and fundamental group unit of society and as such, entitled to protection by society and the State.” South Africa is a signatory to this UN Declaration.
I spoke at a special event at the UN in New York on 15 May 2019 to mark “The International Day of Families.” My presentation to representatives of most major nations, reminded delegates the natural family is the bedrock of civilization. I spoke of the awe and stability of the famous New York skyscraper that owes its integrity to the bedrock that serves as its foundation. Likewise, the family serves as the bedrock of society. We can cannot build a strong, stable and prosperous society without strong and stable families.
The Christian Church must resolve today to prayerfully and actively restore the sanctity of life and the primacy of the natural family as the solid foundation upon which to secure a strong, stable and prosperous society. We must constantly remind government of its obligations to protect all life and the family and labor tirelessly to re-establish these ancient and foundational truths.
The true Church of Christ must lead in efforts to reaffirm life and family in South Africa. If you and I do not influence those in positions of authority with the courage of our convictions, nobody else will. The sanctity of Life and the strength of Families are fundamental to the success of every nation.
The world has changed in 2020. The global pandemic has compelled governments, business and civil society to operate differently. God is giving His people a unique opportunity to use this time to Reset, Refocus and Restore the sanctity of Life and the integrity and primacy of the Family.
Without the right to life being extended to all life, both pre-born and born, human rights are redundant. Without strong and stable families serving as the foundation of society, life is disfunctional and degraded. That’s why the Psalmist enquires, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3. It is time to Reaffirm Life and Family.
