I work as an armed response officer for a well-known company in South Africa. Although the work can be very dangerous and stressful, I get to know the people in my area and often have the opportunity to chat and encourage them. The Lord has been faithful in keeping me safe from any serious harm. I was recently challenged by a message that I heard at church – God speaks to us and has things for us to do, but we often do not hear His voice. I determined in my heart to listen to Him in that coming week.

Following the voice
Fast forward a few days, and the Lord spoke to me. It was after midnight, the streets were quiet, and the night was peaceful, for a change. I was on a routine patrol but decided to deviate from my normal route, as I wanted to grab a coffee from a nearby petrol station. Passing a park, I noticed the silhouette of a dark figure sitting on a bench. I heard a soft voice urging me to pull over and go investigate. At first, I wanted to ignore the voice, thinking it was just my own thoughts – but in the end, I drove around the corner, parked my car, and made my way to the gentleman.

He pointed his gun at me
At first, he did not notice me, but as I approached him, he jumped up. He had a gun in his hand and pointed it at me. Normally, I would react extremely differently in a situation like this, but instead I listened to the voice of the Lord affirming that He will protect me; and that I must help the man.

God used me, He will use you too!
I spoke gently and softly and managed to get right up next to him. I put my arms around him and hugged him while praying for him. He started weeping and sobbing. After I disarmed the man and encouraged him to sit down on the bench, he confessed that he was just about to commit suicide. God sent me there that night to help save this desperate man’s life!
