One Sunday afternoon I was driving home, having visited my parents in the West Coast. I have driven this same road numerous times, but this time was different. As I drove over a hill past Malmesbury, I saw that a Corsa bakkie and another car had just collided ahead of me. It was quite a distance from where I was; I immediately started to brake. My car at the time didn’t have an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and I couldn’t stop in time. I hit the bakkie… I remember praying in the moment that I would be okay and conscious after the accident (as I was alone in the car and the sun was setting). I phoned my parents in tears. Family friends from Malmesbury came to help me while my parents drove through. I was okay, but my car was completely written off.
Feeling sad and confused
I felt so sad… The accident wasn’t my fault; I asked God why this had to happen to me. The search for a new car began; and a few weeks later I found one. I was happy with the upgrade, but I was still not sure about why I had to go through this horrible experience.
A dangerous experience
Fast forward a few months. It was a Friday night, and I was driving through to the West Coast to go visit my parents again. It was dark and my one headlight wasn’t working, so I was driving with my brights on. As usual, when cars came from the front, I switched off the brights. A while later I realised that the road was deserted, and I turned on my car’s brights again. I immediately saw a big truck in front of me busy turning right onto a farm road. The truck had no lights or reflector tape, and I hadn’t seen it. I slammed on the brakes immediately and stopped less than a metre away from the truck. My heart was beating fast and I was ice cold…
The Lord’s hand
After I got over the shock, I continued driving with tears streaming down my face. I realised that God works together all things for the good of those who love Him. If I hadn’t had the previous accident, I would have been driving my old car without ABS and there would have been no chance of me not crashing straight into this truck. Thank you, Lord, I know it was You!
