A heartbeat is a two-part pumping action that happens in about a second. It is a miraculous electrical-mechanical combination that, for humans, signals the beginning of life. As blood collects in the upper chambers, an electrical signal causes the heart to contract and send blood flowing out to the rest of the body. When this process stops, life stops. We won’t last long without a heartbeat.

Uniting teams
A heartbeat is also the life flow of an organisation, that thing that gives purpose and meaning. It can unite a team around a singular goal or passion. It brings clarity. It is the rhythm of varied activities, united into a single cadence, the weaving together of many threads into a unified tapestry. A heartbeat is sparked by passion. It declares mission and purpose, providing the foundation for all else. It defines identity. It provides framework. 

What drives us
The heartbeat of Scripture Union South Africa is the beat of a single cadence: to raise up a generation of young people who are gripped by the Gospel and passionate to share Jesus with others. It is a single, compelling pulse. It is what drives us, it’s our life flow. And it carries a message desperately needed throughout our society.

And this is what we know:
South Africa is filled with incredible challenges, challenges that leave many of the people in our land without hope or a clear way forward. At SU, we are not satisfied with this status quo. We believe that the Gospel brings hope and healing. And we believe that there is a generation of young people who either need to meet Jesus or who are passionate about Jesus and want to live out their faith in a way that makes a lasting difference in the world. So, our heartbeat has a strategic, two-fold focus: 

Engage and equip your church
At SU, we want to help your church flex its missionary muscle by equipping Youth leaders, Sunday School teachers, Camp directors, School Christian group leaders, and Holiday club leaders with impactful training and resources that ‘help young people know and walk with God.’ We have an arsenal filled with tools designed to help you as a church leader impact your community, from evangelistic outreach tools to programmatic discipleship resources. We will journey with you to equip you and your church for the challenges of our ever-changing world.

Transform our world
With nearly 100 years of experience reaching South African young people, our resources have a proven track record of impacting others with the message of Jesus. This means that our School Christian Groups, Holiday clubs, resource hubs, campsites, and other key resources and activities are geared to facilitate the transformation that we all long to see.
