“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God…” – Ephesians 6:17

The day that you committed your life to Jesus, you enlisted in His army. The Lord equipped you with a suit of armour to protect yourself and gave you the most powerful weapon you could ever wield: the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, to face any battle in your life. So why do believers still struggle?

Why aren’t we using our sword?
Almost every day, I hear someone complain (I do have compassion – my primary love language is quality time, and my main spiritual gift is exhortation). I listen, show empathy, and then ask them, “Why aren’t you using your sword?” Often, I am met with a blank stare. At that point, I direct them to my laminated posters on the wall or my phone, which list our inheritance in Christ. I read the scriptures, line after line, and pause for their reaction. Then I remind them: these scriptures are your weapon to counter any attack.

Encouragement to stand
The Word is also given to us to encourage us to stand firm. Jesus has already overcome the world. In John 16:33, He says, “In this world you will have tribulation, but take heart, I have overcome the world.” As believers, we are in Christ, so we must rejoice and live in His victory. Take time to meditate on Ephesians 6:10-19. The Word of God is the most powerful defence we can ever have.
